Re: Touring priorities

ENJOY IT! Sums it up for me, if you fancy a diversion, short day, long day, early lunch because its a nice pub, etc then do it! Don't get into the situation where you are simply mauling miles because its part of a plan! Absolutely right. Having to be at at a certain place by a certain day/time is n...

Re: What to do if your brakes fail?

Years ago a group of us used to end our week end loop at a pub at the bottom of a very steep hill. The rule was, no racing until the top of the hill, then go for it! Last one in the pub bought the round. You had to have very effective brakes to negotiate the sharp right into the pub car park at the ...

Re: What to do if your brakes fail?

I'm pretty sure that I remember reading in an early edition of Richard's Bicycle Book (early 70's?) his suggestion.

Whip handle bars to 90 degrees. Forks will fold gracefully into the tarmac, tuck and forward roll.

I didn't believe it then and I still don't.

Re: Waterproof saddle covers

I just use one of those cheap blue plastic carrier bags that you often get from corner shops. Much smaller than the traditional supermarket bag and folds into a satisfyingly small sausage that can be pushed over the saddle rails and right up into the nose of my B17 for storage.

Sorry, can't help. For some reason I never ride east of Brum.

But if you need a pit stop or a bag drop in Brum please feel free to give me a shout.

You know you're a cyclist when
You're driving and you find yourself automatically flicking your foot sideways on the clutch pedal to unclip when changing gear  .

I find actually getting astride the bike is the hard bit. If I can do that I'm fine.

Re: Touring alone - pros and cons

Touring alone is great. You don't have to worry about speed. You can change your daily destination on a whim, without discussion. You can change your mind. You can suddenly turn left, wondering what's down that lane there and end up camping outside a town you'd not planned to visit. You meet people....
