Re: Extinction Rebellion

So, perhaps the best thing we can all do for the planet is embrace Brexit :D In earlier pages, brynpoeth has suggested reduced consumption as a Brexit benefit. I'd probably embrace a Brexit that offered those things. It doesn't seem to have been on any of the Brexiters' agendas though - left or rig...

Yes. We make and export artisan gin. Or, at least, we stick our own labels on and say it's produced here.

Re: Extinction Rebellion

The other "cost" to Virtual Tourism is to decimate the income for many countries and cities. Some countries rely on tourism for over 40% of the country's income. Take that away and there is mass poverty, destitution and hardship Presumably, no one would suggest the total and immediate abo...

Travel is supposed to broaden the mind, and sometimes it does, but I can't say I've noticed any correlation concerning the broad-minded and the well-travelled.

Re: Extinction Rebellion

Anyone tried 'virtual tourism'? Google Earth with a VR headset. It's really quite good. You get a proper sense of scale, can look around etc. Quality isn't great particularly at street level but it's early days... (I've even had a walk round my own garden for a virtual 'staycation' ;) ) You can vis...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

... I thought 'going limp' was an offence in itself - effectively resisting arrest. ... That's something I've not heard of before, although that means nothing. Is there some basis for your comment? (Genuine interest on my part here.) It's something I've been told by someone familiar with protests -...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

There was a police officer on the TV this morning saying the protesters where giving them trouble precisely because they were so peaceful. Simply going limp when trying to move them and thus tying up 3 or 4 officers per protester. I thought 'going limp' was an offence in itself - effectively resist...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

MY problem is that we had a developing effective campaign involving children and allowing them to take some part in THEIR future However what will be remembered about the last few days is that a group of nutters were responsible for a series of episodes of vandalism, inconvenience, costing people m...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

But the flight to Bali is simply for pleasure. It is obviously avoidable. People mostly do it because it is nice, not because it is essential to keeping a roof over the family. Not flying is an easy choice, and a lot of people are not making it. In fact they are flying more. I'm sure Bali / Austral...

If we're totally honest the fact is we're the WHOLE problem,we're a very very clever species, however in wisdom we're sadly lacking :(

Some baseless optimism: I think the human race is better (or marginally less awful) than its leaders.

Re: Extinction Rebellion

So one question might be how does the current series of demo's tackle the problem of which we are all part? It's drawing attention to it - sort of - but then what? Also, I must have missed something because it's a stretch of the definition to include air travel as public transport. :? I don't know....

Re: Extinction Rebellion

Every flight to Bali is populated by individuals. If you are on such a flight to take part in a humanitarian project, not a holiday, fair enough. But if you are on it for a holiday, you are part of the problem. I But aren't we ALL part of the problem? We could all be individually audited for enviro...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

I'm not listening to anyone on the subject of climate change if they still fly for pleasure. That's your right, but don't you think it depends on the details? How much does this person fly? How far? For what sort of journeys? And what point are they making? Are they being outright hypocrites, or ar...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

I see one of the protesters suggested air travel only in emergencies as one of the ways to get to zero carbon. While having an Instagram showing him in exotic locations The usual do as I say not as I do. https://order-order.com/people/robin-boardman-pattison/ Yep: If you can't kill the message kill...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

One of the protestors might have gone to some exotic locations, so that invalidates the entire protest? If he hadn't been on a foreign holiday, he'd be accused of virtue signalling. That's the grubby and bitter world of Guido Fawkes. True - some student protesters are naive. Others seem shallow. So...
