Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

So his rock and a hard place, completely of his own making , is significant and unavoidable. I would question that. Membership fo the EU has been rumbling away as a political question ever since we joined. Nigel Farage and a sharp increase in European immigation brought it to the boil. Johnson's re...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

So his timetable motion always was going to fail. So rather than keeping his foot on the accelerator whilst steering at the wall, why not set a more realistic schedule and get it passed? It's because everything is a game - a zero sum game which he can only win if the other side loses. Since the ref...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I don't imagine that Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson will hold to that promise (does it count as a promise?) any more than he'd stick to any other promise he's ever made. If his wedding vows were delivered in anything like the some tone with which he makes commitments at the dispatch box, it's a...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Does anyone know of any good ditches to email to Boris? ..... I can think of a few particularly slutchy smelly ones locally that he and his cronies would feel quite at home in,I'd even take them there myself and 'em all a shove :D Oh it has to be Devil's Ditch, surely? Reach to Woodditton in Cambri...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

I said earlier that a lot of people are bad at financial planning, but to be fair to those retired persons abroad, they couldn't have reasonably expected that the UK government would deliberately trash the economy. It's far beyond the usual currency fluctuations.

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

So I'm unsure if their predicament is down to poor financial planning or if they are victims of an inconsiderate UK Government. Probably both. Many people are terrible at financial planning, and most governments are careless about the effects of their policies on politically weak groups [see Windru...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

:::::SOVEREIGNTY ALERT::::: For all those who have argued, here and elsewhere, that we will be regaining sovereignty - the WAB going through Parliament explicitly recognises that Parliament is already sovereign. Anyone who has told you otherwise is misleading you. In summary. We never lost sovereign...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

...and possibly Boris booting some Lords out to join Heseltine as ex-Tories. ...a tactic that worked so well for him. Can anyone remember when the Conservative Party was conservative? This death cult thing has been brewing for some time, but now it has consumed the whole party. Steve Baker, dressed...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

When Rees Mogg said of the referendum result; "a victory as great as Waterloo" (roughly), he turned my stomach and set me against him. I cannot respect such a narrow and silly man. And quite apart from being silly, he's a liar and a hypocrite. As a general description though, 'silly' does...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Soft brexit That'll need defining. The ground has shifted so far and so fast that no one can agree on anything any more. Before the referendum, Norway, EFTA and Customs Unions were thrown about by Brexiters as desirable outcomes. Now they are a betrayal of the Will of the People. So, Soft Brexit - ...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

so any one here think Boris has done a good job. His deal required him to do something he said, only a few weeks ago, was utterly unacceptable, and something May said no PM could ever do. I know Johnson has no beliefs beyond self interest, but discarding even his pretended principles so casually su...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Everyone, remainer or brexiter, should be afraid of a government that either 1) doesn't have a clue how its policies will pan out, or 2) wants to hide its findings from the public. Sounds like every Government we've ever had  Well, yes. Evidence based policy is a rare thing. But when the count...

Re: ** The Brexit Thread ** - 'Brexit Means Brexit'

Hi Psmathe, Always view the creation of such economic models as about as reliable as feeling seaweed to predict weather! My rheumatism is more accurate    . MM Your alternative? Government policy should be entirely evidence free? Government shouldn't plan at all? Everyone, remainer o...

Re: Lost members?

Who defines the "super" aspects of an enhanced human superman? Will it, for example, include a greater or lesser ability to empathise; kill; set and attain goals; etcetera? What might be better for an individual might not be better for society. And what about strength in diversity? Presum...
