Re: togglechaintour bikes

Afraid Jen and I won't be making it either. TCT1 was so challenging that we decided we needed a months cycling in Croatia to prepare ( mainly balancing at low speed ). I managed to come home with a dicky ticker and my first appointment with the cardiologist is tomorrow. Enjoy yourselves and may the sun shine on you. Mike and Jen

Re: Trangia Stoves

As requested I did a search before posting and found this old thread. It seems a good place to ask my question but first, to avoid soot with a Trangia use methyl alcohol not meths. This can be found in supermarkets and village shops in Spain and France. My question is: Does anyone know if it can be bought in Croatia as we are camping/cycling there during May? An alternative is to use the Trangia gas adaptor which we find very effective if expensive. The next question is does anyone know if English type screw top small gas containers are available in Croatia. We don't want the piercing type nor the non standard screw used by Gaz. Nor do we want the multi kilogram type. Failing that it is 10% water in meths.

Re: togglechaintour bikes

I don't fancy 45 kg on a bike. I'd definitely fall off that!

Might it be something like this? Suitable for Norfolk and less useful in Devon!

Looks like just what we need for delivering beer from Topsham Brewery. Is it local? I fancy putting a Sturmey + reverse into something and that would be ideal :D

SRAM

Does anybody know, off the top of their heads, if a Sturmey changer will work on a Sram 3 speed? Family turning away from dedanglers so it's all in a good cause! Mike

Re: togglechaintour bikes

As we came the furthest we got home last But you'll all be glad to hear that I did not fall out of the car on the way home. Graham, that was EXCELLENT and you more than deserve the praise you have got here. I suggested that Jen might like to do the next one and she said " Yes, but I want my old bike back". So that looks like a Viscount project for the next year. Thanks to all of the magnificent collection of anoraks and here's to the next time. New Forest in Autumn has my vote. Finally our thanks to Chris Davies for letting us have his booking. Mike Wynn

Re: togglechaintour bikes

Most of you must be just about ready for off so here's good wishes for the weekend. I have been lurking here for a long time, enjoying your good natured banter and making the most of your refurbishment tips. My project, a 1970s hand built tourer only hit the road today; a bit late for coming to Norfolk. So I hope you all enjoy yourselves because that way you'll do another and the Wilson and I can come.

Re: What if you add another fuel to Meths in a Trangia?

I agree. Methanol is the stuff. It is widely available in Spain and France labelled as cooking alcohol ( alcohol de quemar ). Do NOT use it in your sauces! The cooking bit means it is used in the table top heaters that are used in restaurants. Supermarkets have it but in Spain quite small village general stores or hardware shops also stock it. In England I've given up on meths and use a gas adapter which is very quick.

Re: What Hub Gear

Thanks Graham, thats what I wanted to hear; that the shell is the same. I am not certain what is wrong with the present one but I cannot get it properly adjusted for more than a few miles. I have changed the changer and checked that the wheel
is not moving in the drop outs. I suspect that after all these years, some teeth have got cracked. I just hope that it is not the set that are fixed to the inside of the shell because that would mean a rebuild. Shopping trip to the dump soon then!

Re: What Hub Gear

re 5 to 3 conversion. The Rohlhof is a superb gear and I have one on my "best bike". But the bike with the S5 has given me sterling service for 30 years and is handbuilt and elegant like no modern bike is so I would like to get it going again without spending hundreds on it. Any help from those who have mixed and matched sturmey innards would be appreciated.

Re: What Hub Gear

I have a sturmey 5 that I fitted around 1980. It is a bit tired and I am wondering if I could just slip in the innards of a sturmey 3. I had both to bits a number of years ago and they looked much the same size. Does anybody know?
