Re: Advice needed - training programs

I got plenty of miles in and made sure I could ride 3 successive days of 60+ miles (my expected daily mileage), and that I was “happy” riding in strong wind and heavy rain. I included lots of hill work and regular trips to the gym to strengthen my suspect back. When I arrived at the start I knew that my fitness would not let me down, and this was good psychological preparation.

An alternative to Crask Inn is Altnaharra B&B (downhill all the way from Crask) - owners are lovely and well used to wet, muddy cyclists.
If you're heading through Moffat, Queensberry House B&B is recommended, a really nice B&B with a wonderful welcome - won't forget the welcome of a laundry basket for all our damp clothes and fresh laundry waiting for us in the morning!

Have a great trip.

Adam

+1 for Queensbury, we had a similar experience.

Difficult to find a meal after 8pm in Moffat we had to persuade local Italian to keep kitchen open till 8:30! In smaller towns in Scotland we had to make do with takeaways or Co-ops at this time of night.

Spare shorts (especially since you’re using chamois cream)?

Try this. If no luck scroll down index to page 2 and see “My 16 Day LeJog....”

I will look at stopping in Okehampton as you suggest and follow your route out of Cornwall and Devon.

I’m going to try and plot the route online and will post on here, if you wouldn’t mind casting a knowledgeable eye over them.

Thanks!

I don’t have it saved on my computer but my version of this route can found here. It includes the Weston Super Mare diversion.

It was a great route courtesy of Rob and MickF - the profile shows just how flat it was.

I don’t like them either but there were two days when I was very thankful that I took them as well as waterproof overshoes and warm clothing!

I would report this to Trading Standards - its what this retailer deserves.

I keep thinking that my route would end when I was either deliberately pushed off my bike by the passenger of a passing car, or else wiped out by a BMW driver as he checks Facebook whilst overtaking me at 95 mph.

If you commute by bike in London, then LeJoG would be a doddle.

I like the look of the WIMPS route but going solo would it be advisable as a lot of it is on 'a' roads. There is perhaps the Cicerone route but that could face the opposite problem being over convoluted.

I rode solo (with back up) over approx 920 miles on a mix of A roads and back roads. I didn't have any real problems with the traffic, and wouldn't change much if I were to do it again. If you fancy it then you should definitely do it. This will probably be the most rewarding and fulfilling thing I will ever do. My route can be found if you scroll down a page or two.

Re: Supplies along the way

Travelling in Scotland from Moffat to Livingstone I cycled 30 miles without seeing a shop. Supplies were also hard to find in Northern Scotland. Note also that it can be difficult to get a meal after 8pm in rural areas. In Moffat which is a reasonable size town we had to ask a restaurant to keep the kitchen open until 8:30pm! However, if you stay overnight in towns or villages you should be able to stock up with food supplies on a daily basis (although energy bars might be hard to find in the very smallest places).

Have you tried ski socks? They’re not necessarily thick but I find them warmer than eg merino.

I chose not do it for charity, because I didn't want the extra pressure of telling everyone I was doing it. I only told a select few family and friends beforehand. Instead, I did an organised 60 mile ride for Cancer Research a few weeks later, and asked people to sponsor me "in lieu". Its a lot easier than doing LeJog all over again!!

Re: My 16 Day LeJog May / June 2017

For me. the ride was mainly about getting safely from one end to the other. Scenery would be a bonus. I agree that if you have the time and inclination, then coming off the A9 is probably a good idea. However....I think there is a little more civilisation (food and drink, and accommodation) along the coast road. There isn't a right or wrong way - just what's best for each of us as individuals.
