Re: Santander to Athens and beyond

Why don't you buy the wife a new bike from decathlon, there is one on Athens? You can get something suitable for about 450 euros then you can sell it when you get back to UK or keep it.

Re: Anyone else putting off touring decisions due to Br***t?

Interesting how if you are from the Uk living abroad you are called a neutral, softer sounding 'ex-pat'. However, if you are from outside the UK but living in the UK you are called an immigrant regardless of legal or employment status.

Re: Portugal

I've lived in central Portugal for the last 6 years and know the country well. I rode part of the EV1 route from Faro to Sagres earlier this year. It was OK. It was well signposted with good road markings. Most of the route was on small lanes. some was on promenades and it was pretty flat. The area ...

Re: Heart rate monitors

I bought my first HRM around 10 years ago and just bought a cheap watch-based HRM. The problem that I found that I only had a real time reading and couldn't download anything. I then graduated to a garmin non-gps watch which allowed me to download a file for later analysis and fitness tracking. Howe...

Re: Patch recommendation...

I must admit that for the past few years I've stopped bothering with patches. The stickability of them has either become less efficient, or my ability to use them has diminished. I had a few punctures where the patch lifted after repairing it or I've mistakenly taken punctured tubes from the 'to be...

Re: Assembly of bikes at airports

I'm not sure that there is any rule about assembling a bike when you arrive. What would the justification for that be? I usually assemble somewhere quiet near the carousel as its much easier to wheel a bike out of the airport than carry the bike in a bag, however, a couple of times OH has picked me ...

Re: Cycling to Australia

You don't have to go through Europe, Middle East, Asia, you could go the other way i.e west. It would be so much easier, especially if you took it at the narrowest point. Cycling across Panama would be a doddle, you could probably do it in a day. :)

Re: Plantar Fasciitis

I have had PF for years. What I find helps is a built up insole in my shoes, one of these http://www.talarmade.com/products/category-foot-care/prostep-34-length-orthotics/ Plus I wear birkenstocks, without the insole. whenever possible. I wouldnªt say that my PF is cured and if I went back to a shoe...

Re: Lisbon - Madrid - Bilbao (or Santander)

There are some great coastal towns north of Lisbon such as Peniche, Ericeira, Nazare, Aveiro. All of them (except Aveiro) have world class surf beaches. Like anywhere, lorries will be an issue if you stick to the main roads but you should be OK on smaller roads. You could try some of the eurovelo ro...

Re: Record attempt scheduled

Gethin's record has been around for some time now. I assume Michael Broadwith will be using a TT bike. I had a conversation a few years ago with John Woodburn, who pointed out that he still held the record for Lejog on a road bike.

Re: Italy/Greece in July too hot?

I live in Portugal, where daytime temps get up to early 40's most summers. I like the heat and basically don;t get my legs out unless its at least 20 degrees and even then I have to think about it. Personally I find anything over 38/39 a bit much but when its that hot it only tends it be so for a fe...
