Re: H&S and Risk assessments

I'd tend to agree that most of the RAs Ive come across or done fro cycling training are not brilliant. Some of the pro forma to be used are certainly not fit for purpose. I think what's really needed in each company is a generic activity based assessment which lays out in more detail the general ris...

Re: La Velo Francette (La Rochelle to Ouistreham). Opinions?

Hi teamonster, I just saw you used Komoot. Never heard of it before, but looks pretty good. Just done a small route Bristol to Bath, and it seems to be very good. Do you like it? Yep really easy to use and the clincher for me was that you can adjust the route really easily on your phone by adding i...

Re: La Velo Francette (La Rochelle to Ouistreham). Opinions?

Rode a lot of this last year - Tended to look at the route and then the map each day and work out if we wanted to stay on or not. A lot of the route is on quiet roads well surfaced roads, up towards Caen, you hit some old railway track, but from memory that's smooth as silk tarmac ! Where there is c...

Re: Weather in France (May'ish)

Last May cycled up through France from Spain. According to locals it was the stormiest May in 75 years, we had rain and poor weather almost every day, including some pretty severe storms. Even though we were camping, we still had a great time - carry waterproofs and just laugh about it if the weathe...

Re: Planning routes when you are on tour. PC? Tablet?

Not sure if your Explore has bluetooth etc, but I use Komoot app on I phone now to plan my routes. That syncs via Bluetooth to my Garmin 820 and loads the files straight in. It works seamlessly and Komoot is a very easy app to use.

Re: Velodyssee Eurovelo 1,. September

Thanks both - May chance my arm and give it a go, I think it’s going to be my only window for a tour this year. At least Le Tour is over in the East this year

Re: Velodyssee Eurovelo 1,. September

Sorry to hijack this thread briefly , but wondering how busy campsites in France will be first three weeks of July. Contemplating doing this then, but only heading halfway down, as did Santander to Caen last year, much on Velodysse

Vision zero? Big volvos? Just read that there is a lot of gun crime in Malmo and elsewhere, perhaps Sweden is not the promised land A lot of gun crime!?! Have you been watching too much Wallander? Or maybe The Bridge! :D Sweden has its fair share of issues, especially in deprived city areas, ...

Re: Sweden - buying gas

I've never really looked for gas in shops in towns, but a quick google shows Clas Ohlson which you can certainly find in Stockholm and major towns/cities sell gas in their Swedish stores. https://www.clasohlson.com/se/view/COStoreLocatorController/showStoreLocator/ You'll also find it in some but no...

Re: Sweden - any bike rules/laws I need to be aware of?

Many drivers give way to cyclists, even if they have priority, which can sometimes be awkward or confusing. This made me laugh - I’ve lost count of the mini traffic jams I’ve caused as a pedestrian, unsure of why cars have stopped. My wife tells me it’s all quite logical, but I find they give way i...

Re: Sweden - any bike rules/laws I need to be aware of?

I read some years ago that telephoning while driving was allowed in north Sweden, is that true? -99 if so Was allowed in Sweden until Feb last year - now illegal to use mobile for calls or text unless hands free. That said, the use of phones in cars is still pretty widespread So Sweden was behind t...

It seems helmets are compulsory for children, but only their parents are liable to the fine (SEK500) https://www.cyclehelmets.org/1017.html Yep - Just to add to my earlier post - this is translated section from the Swedish Transport agency site (Apologies done using Google translate - so for Alarm ...

Re: Sweden - any bike rules/laws I need to be aware of?

My local cycle map in Uppsala, https://www.uppsala.se/contentassets/7ca46174db904dcdb95e0fdf11f26040/cykelkarta-2017-2018-webb.pdf has a handy list of cycling infractions and fines in SEK (divide by @11 to give you rough idea of £). Also shows a few road signs you might want to know Cykla mot enkelr...

Re: Sweden - best paper maps?

1:90 000, not 1:100 000, why the unusual scale? I don't know it's very odd. previously all I have been able to find was a very limited collection of 1:50 000 cycling maps, then this time shop had a virtual country wide collection of those at 90:000. It is a different map supplier, so maybe it's the...
