If I was too name my latest he has the character of a "pete"... who ever he is/was.
My kind regards to any Pete's here! :D :D

After 6 weeks of non-cycling activity, I've been given some Metformin tablets but taking these doesn't really seem to help much! :?

Re: Foldable tyres or Wire Bead Tyres????

For long distances I would go for Bead Type tyres everytime!
They are more comfortable and they seem to "roll" with momentum.
I found Continental tyres very economicaly priced and durable but any medium priced tyres should be good enough for what you need.

So SK you take no medication, eat what you like and have a higher than preferred blood sugar level, and currently have no known side effects/problems.
I take it then you are not worried about the side effects rearing their ugly heads? :D

Correct. If worrying about it were to make it better, I would. However, if I were to ever feel any of the side effects, I'd take medication for it. I'm 62 now and know full well that it will prolly catch up with me in a while, but until then ..... :P

Well this is it, if its going to happen its going to happen! Its Genetic with me as I had done all the right things since a boy eg. exercied, ate plenty of fruit and greens, etc.
To date I have never felt better since I was in my early thirties, I am now fifty-nine so the medication is doing me a power of good. I feel a lot better when I have gotton a few miles in, which is usually in the Summer so cycling has to be beneficial for me.
As for giving up Metformin...not a chance! It really agrees with me. :D :D :D

Re: Folding or non-folding tyres

I like non-folding, the wire gives them a better feel!
But I suppose its taste and convenience for most folks which type they choose.

I need a commuter type bike to carry some extra stuff to work.
Thanks in advance.

Re: What food/drink/tools do you carry on a day ride?

For rides +-200km...
Two inner tubes, cereal bars, fig rolls, bananas, sultanas, I top up with Lucozade (bottled water since being diagnoised as a Diabetic) approximately twice.
When I was doing a lot of Audax rides once I had a meal I was set for the day!

Re: Is cycling for me?

eileithyia wrote:Lots of good of advise so far, and my thoughts as I read your post.

Learn to be or appear confident, pick your road position and be fairly dominant about staying in it, it is your space, make sure your signalling is positive, ie stick your arm out, high and level with your shoulders, do not make some sort of signal that looks like you are scratching your b*m.

Look at drivers and make eye-contact as much as possible, do not be some sort of wilting wallflower out there otherwise they will vicitimise you.

Look through the 'on the the road' threads, you will see even us experienced cyclists meet idiots daily who give us near misses... or maybe not it might put you off for life

Get out there and enjoy your cycling and od not let the idiots defeat you. And welcome to the forum feel free to ask for any more advise and join the chats.

if I can add... I would wear a helmet, get used to handling your bike, practice on quite roads, keep your bike in tip top condition, that involves checking everything ie brakes, chain and gears are all in good working condition before you go for a ride.
Good luck.
Ben
Ps I have been riding a bike since 1969.
Pps. Do not forget to give a big smile to all the nice lady drivers! :D
