Re: Custom Storage

Is there space for the bike to hang flat to the wall above the bonnet line of the car?

Re: Tiagra ST-4703 Shifter Not Working

Did it stop working in service or were you working on the bike?
I ask because some Shimano shifters can fail if you inadvertently operate the shift paddles while the hood is rolled forward (for renewal of a cable, for example).

Re: Is this terminal?

When I first saw these I thought they were an excessively complicated arrangement. However, I’m pretty certain the pinned joint allows a bit of rotational movement. This facilitates using said joint on multiple frames sizes as the angle of the seat stays varies with frame height but the dropout angle stays the same. This sort of discrepancy can be hidden in ‘conventional’ metal tubed frames with one-piece dropouts as welded or brazed-and-slotted joints can accommodate a range of angles. With this frame, however, the carbon stay requires a sleeved joint and the dropout has to be let in at a very specific angle.
Additionally, the carbon stay and Zerts shock-absorbing insert are designed to bow under load and as they do so the angle of the end of the stay will alter relative to the dropout.
To go back to the subject of the fracture. I would hazard a guess that the carbon end may have a fracture running up its length. There is a suggestion of this on the underside on photo 2 - although this may be a stray reflection. Again, a guess, which as some have already pointed out, is all that we can do. You either trust the bike shop, trust your luck or get a second ‘hands-on’ opinion.

I shall continue to use one on the road, all-year round. Correct use is what’s required, attention to angle and consideration towards others such as horse riders - when I do my best to remember to switch a flashing light off.
That said, nobody is perfect and some of my rides feature frequent swaps between road and off-road.

Calling all rail fans!

Can anyone suggest a source of a comprehensive list of upcoming heritage traction rail tours?
When I look on google it’s just a plethora of operator ads or partial lists.
It’s rare to see anything in the far south-west of England so I don’t want to miss out.

Re: What Has Made You Laugh Today ?

My friend told me how the other day he was stuck at home for several hours trying, and failing, to fix his sons cherished car that had failed to start that morning.
When the mechanic turned up to tow the car away my friend took a photo of it on the mechanics trailer.
“Good news” he told his son and showed the photo.
“I got £60 for it!”
“Bad news” he added
“We’re going halves on it”

I wouldn’t attempt to heat a very thick chunk of aluminium that is wedged inside a very thin cylinder of steel.

Re: Stuck Raleigh steering tube; options short of cutting it?

I wouldn’t like to trust a corroded stem so would take steps to remove it altogether. I would suggest you cut of what is visible - leaving a straight section if possible - and after removing the forks from the frame, soak the steerer tube in caustic soda solution to dissolve out the remaining stem section.
