Being a Devon lad from Plymouth I could manage the dialect.
BTW the locals use "tiz" not it's.

I'd definitely include neuroglycopaenia in the possible causes for that constellation of symptoms:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroglycopenia

Initial investigations would include measuring plasma glucose and serum insulin and C-peptide.

Thanks for that. I've never had any medical attention directed towards it. For me it was just a case of being adequately stocked with energy gels, just in case.

Re: Feeling bad - is it the bonk?

When I was in my twenties and had a fat deposits lighter than a gnats fart I used to get the bonk quite often. Usually on rides, but, to a less severe effect, at work or passive activities too. At work or college I would have breakfast at around 8am and the knock would kick in around 10:30. On a ride it was usually around an hour in or two hours after I’d eaten.
The onset of the effects were, initially, quite difficult to spot; starting with a curious disconnected feel -as if I were loosing concentration and unaware of how much time had passed. Next was a greying of my vision and trembles. Once this kicked in my understanding of the situation was enough to take some action.
I rarely get it now. I’ve put on over two stones which can only be fat. The benefit of losing hunger knock however has been grossly outweighed by the difficulty in getting up hills.
Oh, well. When it comes to gradients, you can’t have your cake and beat it.

In addition there will be a great number of stress related reactions immediately or after the event that result in physical or mental trauma that are not treated or connected directly to the incident.
So just like the effect that selfishly driven cars have?

(which - if you recall - are also the main cause of adults cycling on pavements.)
Yes, that happens.

Re: Cyclist dies after crashing into open car door

For the most part, no. There will be incidents that directly result in physical trauma because of impact with cyclist or other objects such and the ground but I very much doubt that the care system is recording all of these as due to interactions with cyclist that are riding where they shouldn’t be.

mattheus wrote: 9 Apr 2024, 10:44amDo you or your mum know how many pedstrians are killed or seriously injured by drivers on pavements?
Of all the pedestrians killed whilst on the pavement, 98.9% are killed by cars, 1.1% by cycles.
https://www.roadpeace.org/pedestrian-pavement-deaths-2/
I would argue that the likelihood of someone dying as a result of an encounter with a pavement cyclist is very low but the likelihood of injury, shock, or just upset is far higher. And by upset I mean mental or physical trauma to the vulnerable rather than the displaying of provocative, anti-cycling opinion or behaviour.
I very much doubt that records exist to reflect this.

Re: Worst piece of kit you ever bought

Gatorskin tyres.
I know there are thousands of happy users out there but I rode them through one winter and didn't like the way they handled. They never put me on the road but they made the bike feel vague and me nervous as I like a bit of feedback. I remember one particular club ride where we rode a couple of miles down a wet, leafy lane and I was totally ill at ease with the way the bike was behaving and was left way, way behind by everyone else.
I changed to Grand Prix, also from Continental and was astonished at the huge improvement.

richardfm wrote: 8 Apr 2024, 7:08pm You need to know if your shifter is compatible, do both derailleurs need the same cable pull to shift?

I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows.
Yes, those rear mechs are interchangeable. As is anything up to 9 speed.
What is important is that the number of cassette cogs matches the number of shifts on the gear lever.

Re: Shimano/SRAM incompatible now?

Thanks, Stradageek.
I run ten speed on my bikes but its the previous incarnation that was interchangeable with certain components from 7, 8 and 9 speed systems.
It's a lot less fussy than the current iteration.

Maybe not, for a shimano chain, but SRAM chain is a different kettle of fish entirely. I probably would look to fit a different guide pulley, with taller teeth and reduced float. What cassette are you using?
Shimano Tiagra 12-28
To be fair, Shimano do say you should use a Shimano chain within this groupset. Normally I treat such self-interest with scepticism but looks like there is some truth to it after all.

hamster wrote: 8 Apr 2024, 2:24pm Sounds to me like a sticky cable, as it's the mech spring that initiates the shift.
I would lube the cabling.
Nothing wrong with the cable. Inner and outer replaced at the start and all outer ends were trimmed and finished correctly.
The gear change with the Ultegra chain fitted shows the cable is fine.
