Road Bike Which one?
I looking at replacing my Salcano Ilgaz with something more suitable for riding on roads and commuting. I have a budget of £300 not much I know before the Ilgaz my previous bike was a John Atkins (if anyone has ever heard of him) So my knowledge of modern bikes is a bit restricted any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Free Wheeling Chain Wheels
Can any one tell what happened to a new system of free wheel that Shimano brought out ages ago which put the free wheel mechanism between the cranks and the chain wheels, which meant that when you stopped pedaling the chain wheels, chain and block kept spinning so in essence you could stop pedaling but still change gear?

Re: Gear Ratios
When I bought my first 10 spd in 1978 it was a 52/42 chainset with a 14-24 block 27" wheels 35 years on I now ride a 48/38/28 with 14-28 block 26" wheels. I mostly use the granny ring when I park up for any period of time. I have used it on the odd hill but I can probably count the number of times on both hands, I have had the current bike about five years. I did eventually swap my original gearing from 52/42 14-24 to a 52/42 14-32 which I used for touring usually weekend runs out to a youth hostel averaged about 140-150 over the weekend not much I know but I was happy with it. My mate in the Coventry Cycling Club told me that with a 42 - 32 I should be able to ride up a brick wall, never tried it obviously.

Re: Batteries not fitting
Couple of points A. they are not rechargeable, B. they are AA not AAA they were brand new straight out of the packaging I suspect that it is to do with the fact the Duracells seem a little fatter than the Memorex ones and as the space in the end of the light is a bit tight I suspect they are not making proper contact or they are interfering with the switch which is also in the back of the light.

Batteries not fitting
Has anyone come across this before. I decided tonight after I got home that the light in my Cateye Opticube was a bit dim so I fitted four new AA duracel batteries it would not work, no matter how I arranged the batteries it would not work, works fine when I put the memorex ones back in. Anyone knows what is happening?

Re: At last I'm back on the road
My first day back on the bike was a week today (Tuesday) had the oppurtunity to wear my new over shoes and nice WARM tights. Only problem now is if it's not below zero I get too hot.
