Re: Viscount bicycles!!

My other Aerospace - this blue and silver 74 - 75 Pro - had to put up with being my main bike for a couple of years, and it was looking a bit tired and dog eared as a result. It has had an exruciatingly slow tidy up over the last year or so, until yesterday I realised I had finished it and would actually be able to ride it without also carting round the guilt that comes with riding a nice bike but not keeping it at its best  .

Then I realised that the back wheel was out of true and that I hadn't quite finished it   .

But it does look lovely.

I have that same model (different colour though) and it is such a smooth , fast ride, I love it

Oh nice ! What's your frame number ? Maybe it'll help !

It's in shed at moment , but here's a photo to whet your appetite

Nice to see Sooper8's lovely Linden Green Aerospace - a bike so awesome that pints of delicious ale just materialise whereever it goes. I think that's my favourite ever Viscount colour scheme - even more so than the original Aerospace Pro blue and silver - and I love the sloping, integrated fork crown and half chrome forks.

Here's my Aerospace 600EX, which would have been twins with Peuf's when it was new:

Re: Tour de Yorkshire

I missed the TdF last year (or at least, I didn't see it live, although I was glued to the telly) but me and the family watched the finish of Stage 1 in Scarborough, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mrs G got very excited by Sir Bradley's presence, but inexplicably turned down my offer to wear my cycling kit around the house whenever she asks. The next day I had a go at riding a bit of stage 1, and although it was very beautiful I think it's safe to say I won't be turning pro just yet. Few pictures on the blog: http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/the-tour-de-yorkshire.html

Very much hope its earned its place as an annual event. As with the TdF last year, it was brilliant seeing all of Yorkshire getting behind it. And the route was a little gem...

Moor to Sea Cycle Network - North Yorkshire Moors

I came across a sign post for the Moor to Sea route while I was out exploring Wykeham Forest - http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/backwoods.html - if you've ridden all (or part) of the network, I'd be really interested in hearing what you think. The bit I was on included the lovely view from Highwood Brow, but it also had only one sign post, which looked very much like the kind that Dick Dastardly and Mutley would tamper with to send the rest of the Wacky Racers off in the wrong direction...

Re: SCARBOROUGH - WHITBY CYCLE PATH

Well, I've had a go on this little beauty...

...and it's still an infuriating mix of incredible views and hopeless surface. The more I ride the route, the more I think it should be surfaced so that anyone can use it. It'd be like a cycling secret weapon: stick the kids on it, and they'd be hooked for life. As it is, I am in a constant state of low level panic when I ride it with my daughter (6) in case she comes a cropper.

And while I'm working on unlikely-to-ever-happen improvements, it'd be nice to be able to ride through the tunnel at Ravenscar too...

Re: SCARBOROUGH - WHITBY CYCLE PATH

We've just moved over to Scarborough - http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/the-move-part-1.html and http://thelangsett.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/the-move-part-2.html and the path runs right behind our house. I'm hoping to do the section from Scarborough up to Ravenscar on Sunday.

Re: SCARBOROUGH - WHITBY CYCLE PATH

Has anyone ridden this recently? I would say the section from Scalby up the hill to Ravenscar is / was the worst bit, and there were signs up saying that the path was going to be resurfaced.

It was a diamond in the rough the last time I rode it. The view over Robin Hoods Bay from Ravenscar is the equal of anything else I have seen on my bike, and the surprisingly stiff climbs up to Ravenscar make it a bit more challenging than many ex-rail lines. The last time I did it, me and my brother in law hired a couple of old-ish Dawes ATB's from Trailways with rigid forks, 26 inch wheels and chubby tyres - these were fine on most of the trail but care was needed on the Scalby - Ravenscar section. I've also ridden it on a mid range Specialized MTB with a suspension fork, and that made the rough bits pretty enjoyable. It is potentially very family friendly though, and the surface should be maintained with the aim of ensuring that it is family friendly in practice. As some other posters have said, the main road between Whitby and Scarborough is no fun when the traffic's bad and it would be nice for visitors to be able to treat the Cinder Path as a traffic free alternative, whatever bike they're on.

I am always amazed that it isn't busier - it is fairly easy to find yourself alone on the Cinder Trail. The first time I ever rode it, I and a deer managed to surprise each other, and it ran along the path with these enormous , gravity defying leaps for a hundred yards or so, every bit as fast as I was riding, until it cleared the fence without any trouble and bounded off across a field.

If you're in the neighbourhood, you should give it a go. And if you don't have your bike with you, I would recommend getting in touch with Pete or Ann at Let's Bike Scarborough http://www.letsbike.net/ - they'll deliver your bike to wherever you are staying and collect it when you're finished.

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

The sun's peeking out here in beautiful Timperley, and I have just been flicking through the thread and getting EXTREMELY excited about DFR2. Lengthy negotiations with Mrs G have resulted in an extended pass out, which means I should be able to do the whole ride this year; DFR1 attendees might remeber me speeding off back to the car park wiht a panic sticken expression on my face after the first pub stop last year

The Viscount got its first airing in weeks on Sunday - after I'd cleaned and lubed the stuck, rusty chain (thanks Winter!) - and I was looking forward to another blast round the other night, only to find a big cut across the back tyre and no air in the inner tube. More sweaty suffering on the hefty steel mountain bike followed.

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

If it's the "old" Shimano pattern freewheel that you've got, I have the right freewheel removal tool (which I think is also the one that Stella's referring to). I'm in Manchester if you need to borrow it. :)

Stoatie wrote:Well seeing as the idea was out there I went ahead and created one http://app.strava.com/clubs/53227, feel free to join up. It would be nice to see how others are getting along with their beloved Viscounts.

Anyone manage to get out and enjoy the sun today? I planned to, got up nice and early all set and ready to leave, went to put some air in the tires and broke my track pump. Fine I thought hand pump it is, got the tyre pumped up, took the pump of the valve and promptly snapped the end of the valve off. :x . I gave up hope at this point went back in, had a cuppa then disappeared down the allotment for the day.

Woohoo! I think I've actually joined that successfully! Which means I'd better ow up to the disgraceful fact that the Aerospace is in the cellar, and has been for weeks now - I've just been using my Land Rover like steel framed MTB over the winter, and watching the various components corrode and fall apart in front of my eyes...

Sooper8 wrote:So, is anyone here doing the Eroica Britannia on a Viscount?

I'd be up for a bit of that, particularly if a few other Viscounts are along for the ride. I tagged along to a wedding of one of Mrs Goldie's friends in Tuscany, just down the road from where the the Italian l'Eroica starts, and I spent the flight back gibbering excitedly to a hungover Mrs Goldie about how someone should do a British version around the peaks, so it's wish fulfillment of the purest kind that someone has actually gone and done just that. I'm doing (or more realistically, starting) the Pendle Witches ride this year - http://www.pendlewitchesvintagevelo.co. ... sting.html - anyone else signed up for it? It's a beauty...

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

My first Viscount was a tiny little racer like that one, except mine was in replica KP Crisps team livery - white with black decals. I was a (very lanky) eight, and mine had a sixteen inch frame too. In my case, zooming around on it planted the seed that led to me seeking out my Aerospace Pro a couple of years ago. I had my first ever proper bike ride on the Viscount, catching the train out from Sheffield to Worksop wiht my dad and peddling along beside him on his maaahooosive Carlton tourer. It is great to see another one after all these years. I would be interested to know what it weighs. It looks like a proper little bike with proper components on it, rather than a "kids bike" loaded down with the heaviest and worst parts.

Re: Viscount bicycles!!

Just got back from a week n Majorca with Mrs Goldie, the two little miss Goldies and all of my in laws. There was plenty of this:

Image

But also time fot a bit of this too:

Image

The bike hire place in Cala d'or loaned me this shiny Pinarello Galileo with carbon front and rrear, MAvic Aksium wheels and lots of Shimano 105. This was my first go with brifters and they were ok - easy to use and worked every time. One thing I couldn't do was shift several gears at the same time, although I'm fairly sure you can do that with 105. I am an occasional fan of mashing my downtube shifter in the direction of "faster" on downhills and it was a bit irritating to have to click...click...click to get to the fast cogs.

We were down in the south, which is a paradise of twisty, lightly used roads, a lovely coast line inset with dinky little coves and bigger hills further inland. My brother in law and I wound up at a monastary on top of one of the hills where you could see pretty much for ever

Image That's me, thinking about second breakfast!

Image That's my brother in law, contemplating his Bog Mig style performance on the hill up to the monastary :D

Image The view from the top of the hill.

Image Action shot fail.

We had a beltibg run back down to the coast. There was a little bike computer on the Pinarello, and it was great turning on the taps and watching my speed climb up towards 50kmh. Image

The first thing I did when we got back home was take the Viscount out for an evening run. Like when Bendo borrowed that BMC, I was half expecting to find it a bit underwhelming followng my holiday romance wiht the Pinarello, but it wasn't in any way. It took off up the street like a peckish greyhound, climbed quickly, didn't throw me off in fast corners and only made noises which I'm familar with. It was worth riding soemthing esle for a bit just to be reminded what an accomplished bike the Viscount is.
