elPedro666 wrote: 23 Mar 2024, 10:06pm I know Wiggle/CRC are having issues, but I'm fairly sure it at least used to be 12 months for returns. Just in case these don't find a new home and you have to go back to the returns process. Fingers crossed that won't be necessary!

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my Pixel 6 using hovercraft full of eels.
CRC was 12 months, but they like Wiggle have folded. Returns certainly were 28 days from order for past month of so, but I'm not taking my chances now.
Sadly they'll become another Sports Direct discount acquisition (the site 'holding page' is liking to EvansCycles now), which means I'll never be shopping from them again.

Re: Fizik Artica GTX size 45 Goretex boots

Hi Tim,

I think Fizik' s are slightly undersized in comparison to Spec. shoes.

I have Specialized shoes too in 45 (and Shimano in 46) and this is a little bit too snug/narrow. It may be inner insulation, but for me the size 46 in Fizik fits my wide feet and although the 46 are longer (by about 1cm), I can ignore/accept that to have shoes that aren't pinching.

In case anyone's interested, in my quest for winter/all-season shoes I tried:
Gaerne Icestorm MTB GoreTex Boots 46 (too narrow, too short)
Crono CW1 Winter Mountain Bike Boots 46 (too narrow, too short)
Shimano MW702 45 (uncomfortable sole profile and too small)
Shimano MW702 46 (spacious, but too big, thought they were 47s!)
Fizik Artica Terra GTX 45 (a bit tight all round, these I'm selling)
Northwave Raptor Arctic GORE-TEX MTB 46 (too difficult to put on/off, fit was OK when on, but ankle cuff loose)

And the winners:
Fizik Artica Terra GTX 46 (comfortable, tad long but easy to put on - I'm using these now)
Fizik Nanuq 46 (very comfortable and warm, perfect fit, a bit of effort to put on/off - I'm using these now)

Fizik Artica GTX size 45 Goretex boots

Brand new, unused, wrong size for me.

My wife bought me 2 pairs of Fizik shoes from Wiggle for my March birthday.
Both should have been 46. Annoyingly, these arrived size 45.
No response from Wiggle to arrange return/refund and now it’s 35 days since ordered.

I paid £119.
Will post insured for £110.

When I work out hope to shrink my photos I’ll upload them.

Re: Wiggle... clearance sale without refunds?

Yes, that's what the page now says, returning now I won't see the money and may never see the shoes again.
Shame I had no responses to any attempted contact and then this page came live (with changed wording) after my permissible return period had expired.

I'll be advertising a brand new pair of Fizik's size 45 on here as soon as I have taken the photos.

Wiggle... clearance sale without refunds?

I bought from Wiggle, not realising it was in adminstration.
They packed the wrong size shoes.
For 3 weeks their website has been a 'holding page' with no information
I found an online form to their customer services, thet I submitted a question... no reply
Now I look an it says 'returns within 28 days of order', that has passed by a few days (since my question above),

Should I accept my loss/mistake and sell the shoes as new-old-stock on this CTC forum's classifieds?
Or should I return and hope for the best... and risk them having the shoes by not refunding my money?

Did the Evans mechanic not have the appropriate tool (not being a Kalkhoff dealer) then?

Re: Q: How much resistance when motor is OFF

So have you tried riding at 15mph, whilst with assistance, and then turning it off and seeing how that feels? Try accelerating from 10-20mph with no assistance at all, then try it the same with motor (albeit it cutting out at 16mph). You'll think that you're pedalling through treacle when you push past 16mph. Which of course you're not, it's just the motor is subtle, but significant (oxymoron?).

The subtle (or not so!) wattage boost that the motors supplies is deceptively impressive. If you still have the bike try it. If you've sent it back to Evans, I wouldn't be surprised if they find nothing wrong.

Excellent, thanks for confirming that.
Why didn't I think of looking there first?
One less thing to worry about.

Re: Shimano STEPS battery, always shows 5 LEDs

These are smart batteries, the handlebar display only knows how many power-bars to show based on what the state-information is reported to it by the battery. Handlebar shows 2 bars, the battery should also display 2 LEDs - at least that's my assumption, that I'm seeking to have confirmed.

Has anyone else seen their battery's LEDs always showing 5 green LEDs, or is it 'unique' to my bike?

Shimano STEPS battery, always shows 5 LEDs

My STEPS battery always shows 5 LEDs - whether fully charged or pancake flat.

The bar control/display shows the correct 1..5 blocks reflecting battery-charge state and remaining miles does reduce accordingly. So I know the system's working. I presume my battery should show fewer LEDs to reflect state of charge... but it doesn't, should it?

Has anyone had this issue too or is this normal?

I wonder if a Shimano approved centre would be able to diagnose/fix the issue.

Can anyone confirm that the battery LEDs decreases from 5..4..3..2..1..none as it runs down.

Re: Q: How much resistance when motor is OFF

I agree with the odd sensation when power tails-off/stops at the limit. On more than one occasion I've stopped to check that I don't have a puncture.

When cycling on the Eco setting I am providing sufficient power (i.e. input power on the cranks) to ensure the motor is running at it's Eco-level-max (I think that's about 80W). And because it's so constant when it disappears it exaggerates my (and probably anyone's) eccentric pedalling effort-profile.

hemo wrote:The treacle feeling is just the extra weight of the hub and is centrifugal, if that extra mass was evenly distributed at the circumference of the wheel it wouldn't be so bad, but as the mass is central at the axle it is a heavier dead weight to move unpowered. Low gearing is needed until you are rolling then you should be alright once in to double figures mph. The real effort needed on inclines with out power.

Not, it's not the hub. The Steps is a mid-drive so the motor is "integral to" the bottom bracket assembly and drives the rear wheel via the chain, rather than the rear wheel housing the "engine". The bike therefore does not have a hub motor. In fact it has standard rear wheel/hub, not a NuVinci.

reohn2 wrote:Glad you're having such a positive experience with your Steps system, other than when switching off.
The only thing I can think of is it still having to turn an idling geartrain within the Steps unit, though the ressistance would be minimal it's felt by the rider.
How long have had the bike, what's the battery size and what kind of mileage do you get from a charge?

So, I now conclude there's no friction when the power is off. It's just that after cycling powered and then switching it off, the difference is marked, but it's not because of any friction that I can detect.

Had the bike about a year. It's the standard 400W Li-ion. Charged the battery indicates a range of 40-55 miles (EcoNormHigh). I've managed 60 miles on a charge, at Eco, pedalling leisurely. I've also managed only 30 miles pedalling hard. Charges from flat to full in about 4hr.
I alternate cycling and cycling daily, so I use it for either 40 or 60 miles per week.

The best thing is it doesn't detract from unpowered cycling, which I still enjoy. However, the grin still has't worn off as I whir up the hills.

Re: Q: How much resistance when motor is OFF

Interesting comments, thank you.

Today I rode with my Steps is OFF mode from the start. It just felt like a normal, if heavy, bike. However, switching off after having it on, still feels odd. So I conclude it's the lack of Steps power that makes it feel odd, not any friction/resistance in the motor. So I think the perceived 'pedalling in treacle' feeling is a consequence of switching the power-assitance off. I wonder if the steps actually starts to apply extra power/torque just before the top of the crank rotation, or rather just before point in the rotation where I could physically start applying power.

I haven't yet had a chance to use a rear/front hub motor... so can't comment on whether that feels any different.

As an final comment, the Steps system is REALLY impressive! After buying this bike out of curiosity, I now have no intention of selling it.

Q: How much resistance when motor is OFF

Hello all,

Just seeking observations from others here...

I've a ShimanoSteps mid-drive system. When it's OFF there is some, a little but noticeable, resistance from the motor.

It's barely noticeabl if I'm pedalling slowly, but start pedalling quicker/harder and it becomes significant - almost the feeling of cycling on flat and more like treacle than free spinning. Whether it's because I've had assistance then switched it off and it feels like hard work (as jumping up and down does after being on a trampoline?) without those bonus Watts I don't know. Pedalling backwards is fine, has no resistance whatsoever. I'll try riding the bike OFF from the start and see if I've just answered by question.

Nathan.
