Re: STI levers for small hands

Shimano do shims which sits in the hood which shortens the reach. if you cant find them would be fairly easy to make

Re: More policing by social media

I remember the Chief Constable of Essex being asked after a multi-car pile up in foggy conditions being asked if the weather was the cause of the accidents . He replied no the weather did not cause the accident bad driving caused the accidents., I would say the same applies here, it not just an accident the driver was too close/not concentrating etc, but the drivers fell short of the competence required.

Re: Wide fitting cycling shoes

if your not worried about SPD. Walking shoes such as Meryl might be worth a look waterproof and you have more of choice of width. they have a thick stiff sole

Re: 29er tyres for moderate off-road

WTB Raddler, byway or venture , depending on how road orientated you need to be. I assume 29 is 700c but wider tyres, especially tubeless they are good. I use the venture on sandy stuff round here, but they are still good for on road.

Did they ever meet more recently? Your dad might have wondered if he'd learned to talk proper at the same place as Arthur Scargill
No they never did to my knowledge, I met Barry at Calder Clarion evening when he turned up with a load of Gear Shorts and shorts for sale, in the mid 70s. Funnily enough my dad new Arthur as well, Although Dad was COSA and not NUM.

Are you still in the 1960s. Do you not think that some old man winking at a young girl might seem slightly Creepy, to the female.

Re: Alternatives to Sugar?

you good use a zero calorie drink like High five zero. replace the 3 choclate bars with a flap jack, Bananas are a great cycle food cant stand them myself but a lot of peopel dwear by them. Do you also fridge raid when you get home? have something on hand such as raw carrots or celery to munch when you get back. Also drink water or a large mug of tea on return before eating.

Well ..........................

This morning, what did we see dead and stiff on the hearthrug in the kitchen?
Dead rat.

No doubt Nellie our cat (who is a renowned hunter-killer - but never birds, I might add) brought it in.
We ain't got a real clue where she caught it but she does have a rather large stamping ground. Dunno why she didn't eat it as she always eats what she catches. We only see the leftovers!

The tiles are 6" square ......... to give you a scale.

Can I borrow your cat?

we have just had an outbreak of rats, in the garden in garage found one in the cupboard, eating my supply of poison for the traps. I left it to finish its last meal. Another one ate the bate, and died in the middle of the Garden before I could get my shovel to remove it 2 others were attacking that one. I think the problem is we are between houses that over feed the birds. I think we are coming to end maybe one or 2 left.

Another question - will also look particularly nooby, but I don't have a full set of tools with this bike and so can't easily at the moment take things apart to have a look - fair to assume that even though this bike was fitted with external bearings from the beginning by Hewitt that a full set of threads are in the BB shell so that I can i time replace the questionable external bearing jobbie with a square taper? (I have standing by a good quality Deore square taper crank set which I think is a very near relation of the DE ore external BB in there at the moment.
I hate the modern bearings, there another of those spill over from racing. they purport to give more torsional stiffness, so what. it nothing your average rider is going to notice, same weight wise . main downside outboard bearing don't last anywhere near as long.

No for a number of reasons
1. it would need some form of registration scheme and Policing which would make the cost prohibitive.
2, Bike ability is available to all primary school Children
3. Cost if born by the individual would reduce the number of people cyclin

Re: Flat Pedals vs Clipless

After reading this thread the Gearoid post over a year ago and thinking about my own situation re: foot problems, years of hotfoot trying all the combinations of foot position, pedals and shoes , I decided to give Gearoid’s suggestion ago. Its been a complete revelation, buying a set of Ethirteen pedals, which have a large foot bed, plus a pair of O’Rourke MTB shoes , combining these with an insole with a metatarsal button. And the fact I can readjust my position throughout the ride, I appear to be pain free.
There is no loss of speed or climbing ability using MTB flats compared to SPD. And certainly on longer rides I am not dealing with discomfort, or having to stop. If I want to go to the shops I can just hop on the bike in what ever shoes I am wearing. I do notice even after 3 months I still kick my heel outward when anticipating a stop. All these years of wearing first toe clips and nail on cleats through the last 20 or so year years of spuds

But for a non-computer geek like myself and most users, what would you recommend?

in respect to the fact that if it's not your job that's computers et cetera, you're not being trained in it, and it's not one of your main hobbies, then do anything to do with computers mobile phones even setting up printers getting them to work wireless connections IT et cetera, is a steep learning curve.
and that's time consuming with little reward?
Unbuntu has linux OS and has software but with a windows style front end for all the important stuff so spreadsheets documents presentations etc. not good for gaming as games are mainly windows based. its free upgrades, and it will run on PCs about five years older than the one where windows is creaking at the seams

But somehow you found your way here, even though you don’t read anything political.
