Re: Pass Pixie - camera waarning.

When the 1.5m rule came in I printed and laminated my own signs which I fixed to my rear pannier. It seemed to work.

Re: Sustrans traffic free routes book

You don't really need it mate, just use https://www.opencyclemap.org/.

Red routes are Sustrans National Cycle Network routes.

Re: Bike rack with workshop attached

Saw loads of these on a recent tour of Scotland. The only ones I've seen in England have been in Bristol and one in Leicester.

Re: An effective deterrent

peetee wrote: 18 Aug 2023, 10:01am It’s very obvious that policing speed offences is impractical. It would involve thousands of officers on every road, street and motorway for a considerable period of time before the message gets through. In my town and the local area the authorities are planning to introduce an urban 20mph limit on roads currently displaying 30mph. It is, frankly, laughable. I support the initiative but I don’t think it will make a jot of difference to the large proportion of people who ignore the current limit. They are the problem and only effective, widespread enforcement will kerb their behaviour.
The only practical way to do this IMHO is through a country-wide infrastructure of discrete solar-powered, wifi-enabled ‘hubs’ and a set of cameras that can be moved from hub to hub. The initial cost would be considerable but it’s effectiveness would guarantee huge revenue in the short term and, more importantly, in the long term, change for good.
I think that there will be a beneficial knock-on effect of this too. I believe that most instances of speeding are not intentional acts. They result from lack of attention, either of the vehicles speed or the limit of the road it is traversing. It follows then that any infrastructure that makes motorist sit up and pay attention at all times has to be a good thing.
I get your point about the 20mph limit but you're missing the psychological aspect. People will drive over the speed limit by a certain amount; in a 30 limit they'll drive at 40 not 50 or 60. So in a 20 limit they'll drive at 30 - job done.

Great ride yesterday

Did this great ride yesterday using the Tyne cycle tunnel and Sheilds ferry. Sadly the ferry is under threat due to lack of funding for a new terminal at North Sheilds. Not that I saw much wrong with the existing one unless anyone knows better...

Re: How far do you cycle per week?

My average for 2023 is just over 5 miles a day but I was in Spain till the 13th March and did no cycling there so my average since is 7.5 miles a day.

My average weekly mileage since 13th March is 38.

Re: E-Bike charging power

PH wrote: 12 Jul 2023, 8:52pm Not really something I know much about, though was reading some time ago that an inverter for a battery charger needs to be the pure sine wave type, there's another type, the cheaper ones, modified sine wave? which are suitable for lots of other applications, but not this.
How much riding are you likely to do over the course of a trip? Loads of different factors dictate how many miles a battery lasts, the largest being the level of assistance required. Do you stop for lunch? I know people who even out for the day stop somewhere they can plug it in, Bosch do a fast charger, an hour over lunch would get you 40% of a 500Wh battery, which would be good for 20 - 40 miles.
The inverter is this one https://www.toolstation.com/streetwize- ... ter/p29911 Modified sine wave :(

Our first big trip is scheduled for August to Western Scotland for about a month and we tend to cycle and walk on alternate days. I'm guessing that much of the cycling will be hilly if not mountainous!

Re: E-Bike charging power

Thanks for the replies, I think it's confirmed my suspicion that we might not have the umph for it.

The motorhome has an electric drop-down bed which requires a bit of power. I'm not sure what the rating of the battery is but it's a big 'un. Otherwise it's only really used for the water pump and lighting - the fridge runs on gas. On the plus side, whilst driving, the leisure battery is charged by the alternator at the same time as the vehicle battery is charged.

Having said all that, when we go away we don't cycle every day and have generally cycled less than 30 miles when we do. This would suggest that a couple of days of charging (especially whilst driving) would keep her mobile.

E-Bike charging power

Anyone now how much power is used when charging e-bike batteries?

We have a motorhome and almost always stay off grid (no hook-up) so our electricity is provided by a 500W inverter on the leisure battery and a 150W solar panel on the roof. I'm not sure this setup would work....

We don't have an e-bike but my wife wants one. I'm still quite happy pedalling...

Re: Not reported accident

I can't advise you with regard to the legalities but I can with regard to your neck injury. You have almost certainly damaged a disk in your neck and it is putting pressure on the nerve which goes down your arm. I had exactly the same thing 13 years ago.

See a physio and he will tell you where the injury is, based on where the arm pain is located. The treatment that the physio gave me involved mostly exercises. However, the first thing to do is to reduce the inflammation in the neck (I found ibuprofen to be useless for this). For me this was achieved by applying an ice pack to the neck for as long as you can stand it. I found that the arm pains went away completely after 10 minutes. It came back after a couple of hours but a repeat ice pack application took the pains away again. Over the course of a week, the pain-free periods lasted longer and longer and then became almost permanent. At this point the exercises became useful. I have only occasionally had pains since then, which have always been alleviated by doing the exercises.

I hope this helps.

Re: Bike Lanes on Roundabouts

EddieColdrick wrote: 14 May 2023, 10:58pm Hi!

On my way to work, there is this roundabout:
Image

There is a bike lane around the perimeter, with dashed lines. I have had a time where I have not wished to exit, going around the perimeter, and a truck cut me up exiting (south on the image). I had to stop, of course, and then a car tried to do the same as I am starting setting off again to which I give the "What are you doing?" hand (not the nasty kind!).

After I got to work, I was pondering whether I was actually in the right. I tried some Googling, to no avail. So, I popped in an FOI request with the DfT and they helpfully sent through some documentation as requested, but quite rightly explained that they cannot interpret the law on my behalf.

But it does appear the law and guidance are on my side:

"Diagram 1004.1 Vehicular traffic should not cross or straddle the line unless it is safe to do so and when the line is used to indicate a cycle lane, motor vehicles should not enter that lane unless it is clear of pedal cycles" (The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016)

"You should give priority to cyclists on the roundabout. They will be travelling more slowly than motorised traffic. Give them plenty of room and do not attempt to overtake them within their lane. Allow them to move across your path as they travel around the roundabout. Cyclists, horse riders and horse drawn vehicles may stay in the left-hand lane when they intend to continue across or around the roundabout and should signal right to show you they are not leaving the roundabout. Drivers should take extra care when entering a roundabout to ensure that they do not cut across cyclists, horse riders or horse drawn vehicles in the left-hand lane, who are continuing around the roundabout." (The Highway Code, Rule 186)

Has anyone else seen a roundabout with a cycle lane like this? A first for me. Any ideas on how I could make it clear I am continuing around the roundabout?
Looks really dangerous to me, no motorist that I've ever seen would take the slightest notice of the cycle lanes on exiting the roundabout and wouldn't expect to encounter a cyclist crossing in front of them. I would treat this like a normal roundabout. Whoever designed this has clearly never ridden a bike on roads in their life.

Re: Cyclist Abuse

What strikes me most about this is how close the cyclist is to the parked vehicles (unless the video is misleading). A danger of being car-doored and ending up on the tarmac in the path of an oncoming vehicle....
