Avid Shorty 4-Which cartridge pads and holder?

I'm fitting a set of Avid shorty 4 brakes and want to replace the standard pads with cartridge pads and holders. I've read that Koolstop are very good but I don't want to restrict myself too much. Is there any pad holder that will work with a wide range of pad inserts? I used to use Aztec pad holder...

Re: Seat post sizing problem

Hi, Does anyone know what the standard length of the seatpost is for a Dawes Galaxy. I've had my original seatpost removed after it seized in the frame so I didn't get a chance to measure its length. I've bought a couple of replacement posts (27.0mm and 27.2mm 400mm length) that I intend to shorten....

Re: Replacements for Tektro Oryx canti's

Sorry for barging into this thread but I'd like to do the same thing as the OP. Would the CX50 or CX70 cantilevers work with the Shimano R400 levers that I have fitted to my Galaxy. I'm using Tektro Oryx as well and would like to upgrade. Would I need to change my cables in any way? Thanks.

Re: New to mountain bikes but willing to learn

So, I've gone and bought myself a Montague Paratrooper Pro (20" frame). It needed to be a foldable so that I have the option of folding it away in a corner somewhere and so that I can make it easier to carry up 3 flights of stairs. The front suspension is SR Suntour XCM HLO with hydraulic locko...

Re: Replaceing the headset on a Dawes Galaxy.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My stem is 22mm in diameter. There is no roughness at all and no movement of the forks. I might just strip it down and regrease it all. While its apart I may as well take some measurements while I'm at it (including the stack height as well). I do have mudguards so ...

Replaceing the headset on a Dawes Galaxy.

Hi, My Galaxy is fitted with a 1"dia x 24T headset (marked "Power (clenched fist) pro"). The stem diameter currently fitted 22mm and is a quill type with a socket bolt. Current bars are Netto Noodle drop bars. I'd like to fit a Humpert AHS handlebar so I thought this would be a good t...

Of a good independent bike shop near Hemel Hempstead?

I'm looking for a good independent bike shop in the Hemel Hempstead area. My local bus takes me through Chesham, Amersham and the two Chalfonts (stGiles and St peter) as well as Gerards cross so anything in those areas would be easy to get to. My nearest shop as far as I know is L J Stronnell in Che...

Re: New to mountain bikes but willing to learn

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm going to keep my Galaxy and will give riding into work a try next week (weather permitting). In the meantime I've been looking at a Montague Paratrooper folding MTB. I'll see how it goes next week first.

Folding recumbent-Whats available?

I've been interested in HP Velotechnics Grasshopper FX folding recumbent for a while. I'm just wondering if there are any other folding recumbents available? I've seen a couple of youtube video's of an ICE B1 and B2 but they don't seem to be available any more (at least they are not mentioned on the...

Re: Winter/grippy tyres for my Dawes Galaxy-Please help.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've bought myself a set of 700 x 35c Marathon Winter tyres from rose bikes in Germany. I will keep the Schwalbe Snow as suggested by Vantage in mind as a later purchase. This is all a bit experimental for me as I did not even know you could buy tyres with spikes un...

Re: Winter/grippy tyres for my Dawes Galaxy-Please help.

Thanks Bryce, Which size of Marathon Winter would I choose for my rim. Wheel sizes would be 28 inch (20,24,26 28 listed on chain reaction website) but would the width be 1.6,1.75 or 2.0? Thanks. PS. I guess I've answered my own question. I'm assuming thes 700 x 35c from rose would be OK? http://www....

Winter/grippy tyres for my Dawes Galaxy-Please help.

I have a Dawes Galaxy fitted with Mavic A319 622 X 19C rims and Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700 x 32c tyres. I'd like to do some riding to work down the muddy country lanes. I will probably come across a little ice and snow now and then and some slippery leaves etc. Can anyone recommend tyres that could ...

New to mountain bikes but willing to learn

Hi, I'd like to buy myself a QUALITY mountain bike over the next 12 months or so (2 years at the most) and I'm open to suggestions. I intend to use the bike mainly for commuting to/from work on country lanes with the occasional riding on shared cycle routes/public footpaths in Hertfordshire. There a...

Sunstar Virtus modular e drive

This is something I will be looking forward to when it's in the shops. Seems you have to fit an adapted bottom bracket and then you can remove/replace the motor and battery (not sure about the control electronics-makes sense that that stays on the bike) when needed. http://www.sunstarvirtus.com/ It ...

Cycle specific GPS unit

Hi, I'm using my Garmin Zumo 660 motorcycle GPS on my touring bike. It does not have a bicycle use mode and INSISTS on sending me up hills that are fine on a motorcycle but too much on a bike. I'm looking for something that can run on rechargeable AA batteries and can use OS maps and OpenStreet map ...
