Best thing you can do for important matters like these is to forget about forum questions and answers but send emails to the relevant authorities or use the search function on their websites.
Northern Ireland is part of the UK but Southern Ireland (Eire) is a republic and not part of the UK. So if you are travelling from say Hollyhead to Dublin you would be leaving the UK.

Re: Epic UK Ride
I would say it is worth joining the CTC for more reasons than the routes. It is worth joining for the 3rd party insurance! They also campaign on behalf of cyclists here in the U.K. I did LEJOG camping roughly following the "hostel route" with some detours - I wanted to see Anthony Gormley's "Another Place" sculptures just North of Liverpool. I also cycled from St. Davids in Wales to Lowestoft. You will have a wonderful time I am sure.
Plus one for the midge nets in the evening! I think is a midge topic somewhere on this forum. They are unique!
I found that after a few days I stopped worrying and new that I would find a camp site. The only time I came unstuck was in Chepstow on a saturday evening, I could not find anywhere, filled up with water and put my tent up on Chepstow Racecourse in the dark!
You can experience consecutive days of heavy rain at any time of the year in the UK so you do need to be prepared for that.
Good Luck.

Re: Flying from Wick?
Should have posted months ago but the people at Wick were so friendly and so funny.
When I told them bout MickF saying Far North Aviation were very helpful they all laughed and said "there must be some mistake" but in fact they were great and got my bike back without hassle. So bonus points for them!.

Re: Pictures of your tents.
The first photo is my Robert Saunders Spacepacker during my easter St.Davids to Lowestoft trip at Easter 2011. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/e63sruFKr6hvP3RkmuKB0FIWOjfPvtl4z2peuhMgtKA?feat=directlink
The second was taken during my summer camping lejog and was taken in Somerset. My Dawes Vantage " for the tourist on a budget" - that's me! is resting behind the tent.

Re: Birmingham to London route?
The forum users at Birmingham Cyclist ( http://www.birminghamcyclist.com/forum/ ... e=activity ) suggested:-
"the Old Warwick Road (B4439) to.. er .. Warwick, then followed lanes and villages to the east of the M40 (Harbury, Bishops Itchington, Kinightcote, Fenny Compton, Farnborough, Cropredy, Middelton Cheney, Kings Sutton, Aynho to Bicester. Then the B4011 to Thame then B4445 to Chinnor - up the Chiltern scarp on Chinnor Hill (only biggish hill on the route) Downhill to High Wycombe then A40 to West London"
A route I followed more or less earlier this year.
Returning I took the canal at Brentford and came off near Beaconsfield.

Re: Flying from Wick?
Thank you both.
Rootes - I did actually ask for my money back (in May) but I was told that the airline industry is exempt from the consumer act!
MickF I will contact http://www.farnorthaviation.co.uk/
I do think that if I encounter helpful people it will be ok so thank I am encouraged.
Right time to get out the door to the railway station.
MickF I hope your tour goes well too!

Re: Flying from Wick?
Eek! I guess no one here has done this before! So I better report back in about a month!!
I leave in the morning and am planning to roughly follow the YHA route although I intend to camp - hence no accommodation booked. Hand a left in Cheshire and take the ferry across the Mersey in order to enjoy the Anthony Gormley statues in Sefton. Then I plan to go up to Carlisle and hang another left towards Androssan and take in some islands (but hopefully not too many midges) up to Ullapool, and if time permits take in Cape Wrath on the way to John O' Groats. I have allowed a month so I hope I will have enough time to actually enjoy this.
I will be tweeting and blogging to keep anyone who is interested up to date,
Now I am getting nervous!
Terry.
