Re: Hotels and bikes

Thanks all for taking the time to answer. As a background: I lived in England for 3 years, my wife was a lecturer at University of Kent for 10 years (French language teaching). I now live in France, and I was asked about cyclo-touring, and if we could develop something along the line of the German programme (https://www.bettundbike.de/en/about-bett-bike/) or the one in Luxembourg (https://www.bedandbike.lu).

I thought it would be good to ask about the experience of other cyclists. I can recall having a few lengthy discussions about taking my bike to my room, as the hotels where I was staying did not provide a secure storage. My current town is Saint Omer, and among all the places I have lived , in 5 countries, this is my fav.

Hotels and bikes

I am curious as to the experiences of people when cycle-touring and staying at hotels.
Have you had generally good experiences? Like letting you take the bike to your room or having a secure place to store it?
Knowing local bike shops for repairs or general supplies?
What could a hotel do to attract cycle- tourists and make sure they are seen as a valuable customer?

All thoughts are welcome.

Re: Route suggestions - Northern France

I live in Saint Omer, about 25 miles from Calais or Dunkerque, and I would like to offer a few suggestions. My town is situated on the border of the Artois and Flandres. By going a bit south/west you can get some hills, in fact between here and Hardelot Plage it will be up and down the whole way. If you like it flat, then go east and north. There are plenty of cute B&B along the coast.

Vimy, and the Canadian memorial is about 45 miles, going towards Arras and mostly flat, as most of the path follows a road along the canal. Those roads are usually paved, not rough towpaths, by the way and very little car traffic. If you are headed that way, a nice place to stay would be Chateau du Moulin, in Aire sur la Lys.

Ypres is an easy 30 miles, but you can add a challenge by taking Mont Cassel, Mont des Cats and then Kemmelberg on the way ;-)

As for Saint Omer, several nice places, and there is a very cute and bike friendly B&B down by the canal / train station. On top of that, we have a phenomenal selection of excellent restaurants here.

If you would like any more info, just drop me a PM.

Re: Hotel in St Omer & rides in the area.

Hello,

I live in Saint Omer, and there are a few other options, such as a few B&Bs that are bike friendly. Good rides - it varies, if you like flat, head north, there are some hills between here and Boulogne, going south or west will give you rolling land. Our local FFCT chapter is friendly, sunday morning or Thursday afternoon rides. Sylvain Vasseur has a bike shop, he used to be a pro rider, and there is a group that meets at 0830 on Sunday mornings at his shop on Rue de Dunkerque.

If you have any questions or want more info, drop me a line at paul.tregouet@laposte.net. Deal is our twinned city in England, and I would like to start some activities with any clubs in that area.

a bientot,
Paul
