Re: Suspicious new forum members

The world's full of these people... the other day, I was cycling along the Frome when I passed a couple of guys with a Voi scooter - grown-ups, mind - not teenagers... and as I passed I heard one say "OK, now go for it!". It wasn't until I was a couple of hundred yards farther along that the meaning of this scene dawned on me, which was that the two blokes had pitched the scooter into the river. Now, exactly how is that going to bring any benefit at all to either of those chaps??
(The good news is that the scooter fell onto a mud bank and not into the river itself and I have told the Voi peeps where it is.)

I won't be able to see it as my seat in the pub does not face the water...

Deliver - Ooooh !

Less vans good - no vans better, to paraphrase Animal Farm... Here we read that 'leccy cargo bikes outperform ice vans in all sorts of ways. I'm thinking that might prompt many service providers to move towards that solution. Or am I dreaming?

How would you measure "health" other than by life expectancy, please?
What with the advances in medicine & wotnot, I fully expect to be at my absolute healthiest around 20 or so years after my death. Meanwhile, every day seems to bring another setback to my power, flexibility and stamina - it is most annoying...

Re: Republic of Ireland

Northern Ireland is a country (or region, or territory, etc.) and so should be treated as a proper noun, that is, capitalised. The word southern in the phrase southern Ireland is simply an adjective and so is not spelled with a capital s. There's not much more to it than that - unless readers infer that the phrase southern Ireland refers to the country of Éire, or in English, Ireland.

Re: inline adjuster - am I going potty?

I've had another twiddle and it does look like it's possible to over-extend it, so that the threaded portion is retracting and pushing the other end up at the same time... seems an odd design, but a bit of user-error mixed in there too I think!! Anyway gears all bang on now :D

Re: inline adjuster - am I going potty?

I'm just wondering if I should have two inserts in place - the piccies show one only, at the top of the adjuster. I could of easily dropped one when I put it all together...

inline adjuster - am I going potty?

I popped this neat barrel adjuster in the cable run for my hub gear, but was finding that it didn't really seem to affect any adjustment. So I looked at it more closely and I see that as much as it extends one end, it appears to reduce the other! Surely that's not how it's supposed to work. Any ideas?

Buy from who?
I'm suggesting that the very few left after sustinance and habitable land run out are likely to be the very richest. I acknowledge that traditional economies will collapse as millions die off and tradeable good / services diminish, but I'm suggesting that the super-rich will be amongst the last to die off as they will have had access to essential resources as they dwindle. I don't know how it will all pan out in the last days, but imagine that those left will have bought their way into citadels and whatever the plural of an oasis is...

Re: nut on a Presta valve - yes or no?

It's great to hear all the points of view! I'm gonna carry on not bothering with the circular metal threaded nut but deffo keep using the plastic valve cover. I'd forgotten too that Michelin's Presta valves are smooth, and thus could help the longevity of my track pump head rubber washer

Well Done! There is something very satisfying about building / trueing a wheel yourself. And cost-effective too - in a fit of generosity, I took a wheel and rim to a local trader to build recently and nearly passed out when I saw the quote!
