Audax67 wrote:In any case, when you boot up an eTrex - well, my 30x anyway - it loads the profiles of all the tracks it has stored. I used to keep interesting tracks on the device until I realized what "loading profiles" referred to: getting rid of them made start-up much faster.

The boot up time on my eTrex30 varies between almost "instant" and "forever", with no logical reason why it should vary so much. At least, no logic that I can see. Sometimes I give up waiting and just pull the batteries and and put them back in again, whereupon it starts faster than it was(n't).

I like the kit, but it does have some annoying foibles.

Re: Garmin eTrex30 doesn't recognise new GPX files anymore

I thought I had replied to this thread and closed it off.

I deleted some of the 300 plus(!) tracks I had on the unit and the problem just disappeared.
This I did by copying all onto my pc and deleting them on there, then relaoding the ones I want back onto the unit.
As has been pointed out, there seems to be an undisclosed limit to the number of tracks etc it will hold.

As an extra, I find the wireless connection now works more than once before I have to reboot the units.

Problem solved. Thanks for your help

Re: Garmin eTrex30 doesn't recognise new GPX files anymore

Thanks for the detailed response, Sweep, but I had already tried this (temporary removal and rebooting before re-instating), without success.

I will try your suggested link about waypoints.
Sorry for the delay in replying, but I was away at the Birthday Rides. But for me, they were a non event due to a nasty bladder infection starting on the day before and taking all my energy away, never mind the painful peeing!

Re: Garmin eTrex30 doesn't recognise new GPX files anymore

Many thanks, fellas.
I saved everything to my PC, then deleted some of the (over 300!) tracks on the unit and all seems to be working OK again.
I can't work out which Waypoints relate to what (is there an easy way to do this and then add a name rather than just a date to them?), so have left them all. They are only tiny files anyway.

Have you done a factory reset?

Garmin UK support is pretty good: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/.

Thanks, but yes, I have done a factory reset, and also a full format of the unit.
I have used a different USB cable.

The Garmin support page might be good if I could get past the "I am not a robot" box !

Garmin eTrex30 doesn't recognise new GPX files anymore

I have had a Garmin eTrex 30 for a few years and have always been happy with it. I have created routes on "ridewithgps" many times and successfully downloaded them onto the main unit and the unit has recognised them OK and I have happily followed the purple line all the way along the route. If I make up a route as I cycle along and then decide I want to save it for later, I tell the unit to save the route, and it creates a route that I can use again in future. I have been so happy that I bought a second unit for when the eTrex 30 is no longer made, and that also performs excellently.
I also have an Edge Touring, that does all of the above, but is not so easy to use, or adaptable.
BUT for a week or so now, The two eTrex 30 units have both had difficulty in recognising (showing) some new tracks that are in its memory (I know they're in there, because they show up in Windows File Explorer on my PC when I look into the eTrex 30 "GPX" folder.
Today, and yesterday I used the "Save ride" facility to save the ride, which it told me it had done. But it then fails to show it in the Tracks list (again, it's actually stored in the unit, because I can see it in Windows file explorer on my main PC). So, it can't even see the track it has created itself!
The Edge Touring does not exhibit this fault.

My older tracks and waypoints etc are still working and being shown OK, it's just those created or downloaded for about a week now.

I have ensured the eTrex 30 has the latest software from Garmin's Express site (it's 4.90).

Edited - I have also reformatted the memory in the unit and reloaded all files from an earlier back up, to no avail. The problem persists.

This is driving me potty. Any ideas anyone?

Re: How many miles do you get out of your rims?

I find the type of brake block makes a big difference.
Some are very aggressive and rip small bits of aluminium out of the rim, embedding themselves in the face of the block. Digging the bits out simply removes that bit, it doesn't stop more bits being ripped out.

If the block makes a scraping noise (not a squeal, that's a totally different thing) first see if it's just a bit of grit, and dig it out, but if the bit of "grit" is shiny, and/or it keeps happening, it's a bit of your rim and you should change the blocks for a different make asap.

Riding on gritty roads does encourage the blocks to get grit embedded in them.

You really should change the rim when it gets to 1mm or less thick at the thinnest point on the sidewall, or risk a blow out and a walk home. This can be checked with a few old spokes and a vernier gauge. There may still be a link on the main CTC site showing how to do this, under the technical section, if it still exists.

Re: 531 ST Frame Sizing

"But even with the traditional arrangement you would still be taking pot luck about reach to the bars unless you did more research. With sloping top tubes, reach to the bars is effectively the determining factor. Seat tube length is something you don't have to consider. I find it easier to accurately reproduce my ideal set-up on a semi-compact frame. So long as the published geometry is correct."

I thought we were talking about seat heights....
Reach is another can of worms, but cheaper to get right by swapping the stem.

Sweep wrote:At the risk of a quick divert blinky, got to ask, why were you annoyed with the garmin touring?

Partly ignorance of how to actually use it, because of the poor instructions,
partly due to the difficulty of trying to do anything accurate with the touch screen,
partly due to the slow response time after making a turn,
partly due to the awful "keyboard" when trying to type something,
partly due to the fact it still tried to send me on muddy paths despite having deselected them

I still have it and occasionally use it, thinking it can't be as bad as I remember, but remain disappointed.

The eTrex with it's much better instructions, joy stick and easily replaceable AA batteries that can be replaced without the unit losing where it was, more features and quicker response is a much better bit of kit in my opinion.

It still has the annoying habit of freezing if you ask it to navigate somewhere, and ignore it's instructions more than a couple of times. The only way to unfreeze it is to remove the batteries and start again, but at least it does remember where it was and what it was trying to do.

Re: Rim Vs Disk? Why not Both?

If you look at a slowed down version on youtube video of that awful crash to the leading rider at the end of the last Olympic Women's Road Race, you'll see that her rim brakes were good enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxzkTotjZoc
Having taken the wrong line into the bend, she braked so hard that she locked the rear wheel, which slid sideways, then the front wheel locked and tipped her head first over the bars and into the air. The gutter that Chris Boardman was so scathing about, was nothing to do with the crash.

Disk brakes would have done nothing different.

Re: adding third bottle mount

I used one, using a clamp on cage, for an extended camping tour in wild country. No problems whatsoever.
I put the heavy stuff, like tools, in it because it kept the weight down low, and it didn't matter when it got sprayed with dirty water off the front wheel. I don't advise putting a drinking water bottle there, because of the dirty water spraying all over the bit you are going to put in your mouth.

Re: 531 ST Frame Sizing

"Can anybody with more experience than me on Touring Frames explain why most 531st frames are either 22 inch or 23 inch? Most what I'd call racing frames seemed to go 22 1/2 and 23 1/2 etc. Is it a European influence? From memory all my bikes have been going up on the 1/2 inch as far as I can remember. I currently ride a 22 1/2 inch 531 steel racing bike frame with the stem and saddle level (bad back) I'm 5'10" with a 32" inside leg. The stem and seat post are showing approx a few inches so in theory I could go to a 23 inch. I'd welcome any thoughts on this please."

The frame size is determined by the builder, based on
a) what the customer specifies (and that could be down to the nearest mm if needs be, because they are cut to suit,
b) the most common heights of typical buyers, if he is building for stock. Hence the preponderance of mid size frames.

In the good old days, the frame size (as measured up the length of the seat tube from centre of BB to top of seat lug) was your inside leg length, without shoes, less 10". This allowed for crank length and seat pin and saddle height.
I'm 6ft and, using the above formula, where my inside leg length is 34", the frame size is 24", and that's what all my traditional steel frames have been.

The modern "compact" frames with sloping top tubes, are anyone's guess!

Any set of jockey wheels of the correct diameter, thickness and bolt hole will fit. Take the old ones into your LBS and ask them to supply replacements.
