Re: Maintenance and toolkit when touring

This elaborates on my point. I bought a decent bike with decent components: The idea that it won't last more than a week without maintenance is ridiculous What always worries me with these posts is that they are likely to frighten off beginners or people who don't want to or can't do maintenance whi...

Re: Maintenance and toolkit when touring

Hi all, I needed a break and today booked a flight leaving next Wednesday to Berlin, going to cycle to the Hook and get the ferry home going to take about 8 days, my only plan is to head along those green bits on google maps towards hamburg and then kinda aim for amsterdam then onwards to the hook. ...

Re: Eurovelo 15 - the best bits to do?

basel to cologne is pretty good, mainz through to dusseldorf is all really nice.

stay on the german side after basel though, i thought the bit through france was really boring (i don't personally know if the german side is better but it must be)

one you get into holland ev15 is dull

Re: walking shoes for cycling touring

im in the one pair of shoes camp

maybe you could look for a nice pair suitable for on and off the bike

I have just last week bought the shimano XC5 and the TR5 both of which i could happily wear all the time, they're light and comfortable and look pretty smart too.

Re: How do you carry your camera?

I've got a similar camera (sony hx90v - which is great btw)

keep it in my right back pocket,

if you press the on button at the same time as you grab the camera it'll be on and ready by the time your arm is up in front of you, perfect for shooting quickly while still on the move.

Re: Hanoi - bike/box logistics

No help but a work colleague has just returned from a three week motor cycling tour of Vietnam including the Ho Chi Min Trail. He says Hanoi is THE scariest place he's ever ridden a bike :o I've not cycled there and have no useful input really but Hanoi is absolutely mental for traffic and it's incr...

Re: Bike to Germany for Rhine Route

my last few euro tours i have flown somewhere in europe and cycled back to hook of holland to get the ferry home it's been the simplest option logistically for me given the time i have had available to tour It does limit my options somewhat but i don't want to do round trips and I didn't fancy the h...

Re: Alps night time temperature

I've camped reasonably high up an alp in summer (would have been somewhere south of la bresse and sometime between jun-aug, it was a long time ago!) it was a recently mowed meadow, we put a good layer of dry grass under our tents, then used our normal cheap summer camping gear...

is there still a garmin western europe map available? I always liked having GB / benelux / germany all in one file (i'm sure that used to be an option)
