Re: Does anyone know where i can find new 28x1-1/2 wheels?

yes seat stays, my mistake. Could have been, my dad doesn't remember this bike ever having a chaincase, but maybe they were designed with chaincase fitting in mind. They did make plenty of bikes around that time with the seat stays welded in the normal way. Thanks for the tip about 28" wheels, i'll definitely try to get some now and see what it feels like.

still haven't finished restoring my Dawes but i was able to sandblast the front hub/rim, nothing on the rim but the hub is marked BAYLISS MADE IN ENGLAND. Sadly it's not a beautiful high flange alloy item like i've seen on the net, just an ordinary steel one.

Re: Does anyone know where i can find new 28x1-1/2 wheels?

oh and the bars were originally drop bars mounted upside down, my dad put on these ones around 1957, which is also the date on the pedals. In 1962 he was flying down a hill on this bike when a car pulled out in front of him, he woke up 2 days later.

I won't know for sure if the wheels can be saved til i remove the 56 years of grease and rust (30 years in a shed in sub tropical queensland doesn't help either) but i may yet end up using 27 x 1-1/4, something i'm familiar with and trust.

Re: Does anyone know where i can find new 28x1-1/2 wheels?

sorry for the wait in posting these, the sunshine coast where i live has not been living up to its' name lately, major flooding in every direction. Since i first posted i have removed the Williams cranks and dated them at 1955, BB is an english Brampton. I'll get into it more once i've finished restoring my 1969 Dawes Shadow.

this should be chrome, once i have removed it i will get it rechromed along with the cranks.

I don't have a pic atm which shows it, but the chain stays are actually bolted on just above the dropouts, and with the seatpost bolt.

Does anyone know where i can find new 28x1-1/2 wheels?

I'm restoring my father's Healing Roadster (made sometime in the 30s-50s in Melbourne here in Aus). The wheels are completely useless though, i would like to stick with 28 x 1-1/2 inch for historical purposes but can't find a source for new wheels (and most second hand ones are rusty with bent spokes etc). Any help would be appreciated.

Re: what brakes for 700c wheels on 27" frame?

the brakes that were on the bike were unbranded and rusty pressed steel junk so i binned them straight away. Thanks so much for the tip on spa cycles, i had been looking on both Australian and US ebay for some decent looking items (especially SunTour, i LOVE old SunTour bits) and the Tektro R365s look perfect, ordering some of them now :-). Got a brand new wheelset this evening for a bargain price (and in anodized metallic blue with flip-flop hub), finished sandblasting the forks and now just need to decide on saddle, stem etc. I love it when a build comes together :-).

what brakes for 700c wheels on 27" frame?

I'm stripping and rebuilding a 69 or 71 Dawes Shadow and i want to use flashy new deep v 700c wheels, what reach do i need on the brakes? And is there any way of using modern recessed mount brakes on a frame meant for the old style with exposed nuts?

Dawes serial numbers

hi from Australia, i just rescued a Dawes Shadow from the local tip (i even found a mid 80s Pinarello frame once, what an outrage). It looks really cool to me, with the exception of the rear brake mount being a hideous flat plate (i'm hoping it isn't original so i can get rid of it and replace it with something more elegant), so i'm stripping it, respraying it and converting to singlespeed to keep my 1965 Tom Wallace (Brisbane, Australia) singlespeed company. I would just like to get a better idea of the age, at a guess i think either late 70s-mid 80s. It had SR cranks and SR Road Champion bars, Simplex derailleurs front and rear and 27" wheels (steel rims). The serial number is PP6971. Thanks for any info :-).
