Re: Roof mounted racks ??? - Best choice

I think you're right, the weight of the bike is going to be relatively small without rider, and as you say the bike is going to be secured by the back wheel strap. We did have a 561 that I sold on, major problem was that it couldn't take the kids bikes (then because the little one's Isla and its 80m...

Re: Roof mounted racks ??? - Best choice

My mate who runs a bike shop and is a trained mechanic says the bike should face in opposite direction to car on a wheel out rack to minimise Headset damage under brakin, not a problem I have encountered. If you do that with a Thule 561, it'll stick out a long way over the windscreen as the axle mo...

I believe various roof carriers have been bodged onto Surly Big Dummies though.

I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of that.

My Google-fu is failing me, but the bike mechanic who works under Rapha in Manchester has such a thing.

Re: What has the bike stuff fairy brought you today?

Definitely not bike stuff, but the beer fairy brought 12 bottles of Vedett (mix of blond, white and IPA) and two bottles of Jever to try.

Re: Roof mounted racks ??? - Best choice

Stupid question: how does the San Remo compensate for different wheelbases?

You can get a wheel holder for Thule bars.

Re: Roof mounted racks ??? - Best choice

Depends on many factors including what your bikes are made of. Thule used to suggest that their 591/598 weren't suitable for carbon frames. For metal, they're the ones to go for; 591s can be found substantially cheaper on the 'Bay than new 598s. We have two of each and the differences are: * Slightl...

Turbo!

Wahoo Kickr Snap. So I can now return the borrowed-for-lockdown one to its owner.

Re: Recommend a cycle camera ( update : Garmin VIRB 30 ultra bought )

I think Garmin have given up on the action cam market (may be wrong) which seems a pity, as their cameras seemed to have some nice design features e.g. GPS integration, the wee ANT+ remote.

IIRC the Ultra 30 came out nearly four years ago...

Re: Chain noise?

Sounds like indexing needs fine tuning. Could also be that new chain and worn cassette aren't quite meshing. You'll find that some worn cogs don't knit as well as other less-used ones. They will in time - the chain will wear to fit. Aye, I initially thought it might be indexing but I’ve adjusted no...

Chain noise?

Quick one - how much chain noise is normal? Changed the chain on no. 2’s Isla - as this is at least third hand I don’t know for sure but I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the first time it had had a new chain given that kids bikes don’t (usually) do significant miles. SRAM x.3 7sp cassette and KMC 8sp...
