This might be of some help/interest. Good luck with your tour, I'm sure you'll love it - in one of the most beautiful parts of our islands.

Re: Touring bike alternatives?

If you've a good local bike shop that you can trust and that does second hand as well as new, just go and have a chat, and see what they have to offer. For a trip like that which you are planning (allegedly!) I'm pretty sure that you'll have lots of choices at a range of prices, that will fit the bi...

Re: Ditching my Hybrid for a full Spec Tourer

Just read a whole pile of responses telling you this isn't a mid-life crisis, by a whole pile of fully rohlhoffed-mid-life-crisised guys. It's not the bike ... it's where you go on it.

Re: New European Cycling Website

Hi Steven, I noticed on your site that you were not too enamoured about Poland. I tried to reply on your website but I'm not sure if it actually posted. In a nutshell though ... Me and my wife toured in Poland (NE from Lithuania to SW into Czech Rep) in 2012. We've toured pretty extensively in Europ...

Re: Ditching my Hybrid for a full Spec Tourer

Why? If the hybrid's comfy and it hasn't any obvious defects ... unless you're planning a massive trip through somewhere really remote, use the money you would spend to finance a really good tour.

Re: a week on the Romantishe Strasse

This is one of the 'Bikeline' series, covering the Romantishe Strasse. I dont think they do an English translation, but it's good for the map and positions of campsites etc. http://www.esterbauer.co.uk/db_detail.php?buecher_code=ROM You can probably find one on Amazon or from Stanfords. I second the...

Re: bike tour companies in europe

I've used this company a couple of times when organising trips for friends. http://www.freedomtreks.co.uk/ - always found them to be reliable and pretty good value (although it is so much more expensive than doing it yourself)
Cheers John

Re: Recommended cycle tour companies?

I came across this company 'Freewheel Holidays', which advertises a package that seems to fit your bill. http://www.freewheelholidays.co.uk/france-provence/64 I don't have any personal experience of the company, but here's a review of one of their other cycling holidays in France that appeared in th...

Re: Pack-away rain coat and trousers

I agree with mjr on the 'cheap jacket' suggestion. I use a pull-over mak-in-a-pak I got from Decathlon a couple of years ago for less than £10. With the hood up (under my helmet) and zipped up to the chin it's kept my arms and 'core' nicely dry even on days of heavy persistent rain. (A buff around m...

Re: Travelodge & Hostel LEJOG, equipment?

Hi, It might be a bit too close to the time now, but if you haven't come across it before, there's an organisation called Warm Showers you might consider joining. https://www.warmshowers.org/ It isn't exclusively for cyclists but most of the members are. There's places to stay all over the UK (and a...

Re: Fort William to Inverness, wild camping - thoughts?

General Wade's Military Road between Fort Augustus and Inverness runs south of Loch Ness. It's much quieter and more pleasant than the A82 on the North side. There's a steady climb for a few miles to start with but the effort is worth it, and the scenery is beautiful. A nice long, rolling descent ta...
