'Brexit means Brexit' ... ** The Brexit Thread **

If it was a protest vote and it probably was, how exactly do you go about telling the public that their protest vote has been dismissed as irrelevant, while retaining the myth that this is a democracy and they do have a say in how the country is run? I agree. But the protest was directed away from ...

If they want to be a teacher then they are 75% of the way through the required training or don't you regard gaining the knowledge to teach a subject as part of the training to teach it Then there are teachers who spend three years learning to teach on a B Ed course, the modern equivalent of the old...

Re: Alexa, a new member of our family

... When the first wave of bird flu threatened, some of us in government departments were summoned to Cabinet Office to discuss how we would be able to deal with a massive lethal spread. I did my bit about death registration and statistics that have a 1 month lag - not great. But the guy from GCHQ ...

..... If you have Alexa, ask her to play "safe as sheep" by Harry Hill. If that doesn't work, nothing has changed and his song is still true! Those without Alexa, follow this link: https://open.spotify.com/track/3lGrbkqjKIEPHVgnA6uJAG ... And those without Spotify ? (I just got a signup/s...

Re: What is your soln to the Southern Rail dispute?

I'm not being rude merely pointing out that to qualify to teach most subjects a prospective teacher needs to spend three or four years on a degree course training in the subject they are to teach and then a year on a teacher training course. Four or five years training to be say a history teacher. ...

Re: Alexa, a new member of our family

I confess I've never heard of this device. Yet! My experience of voice-recognition robots is next to none - with one exception. There were a few occasions, years ago, when I tried to attempted to pay my electricity bill over the phone, speaking to some sort of automated voice-recognition system: RO...

Re: Blair or Corbyn

My choice - Denis Skinner. :D Al There is already a party for Denis, Jeremy, and others in that part of the spectrum. The Co-operative party. Labour and the Co-operative Party should now split, giving those who are trying hard to support the full width of "the Labour and Cooperative Party"...

Alexa, a new member of our family

I use Siri only rarely, usually only to control music in the car hands free. The kids use Siri all the time, especially for their maths homework. I can't yet put my finger on why Alexa has made a bigger impact for me - it just seems genuinely useful and instinctive in a way Siri just isn't yet. I'm ...

Re: Alexa, a new member of our family

I'm not keen to have an internet connected device always listening to everything going on. And once the magic word is uttered and what you say is passed to Amazon servers, how long to they store your conversations for ? Which agencies can legally ask for those conversations ? How much after the mag...

You're not wearing a tin foil hat are you? You haven't heard of Edward Snowden, have you? He showed that we tinfoil hat wearers have good reasons for that choice of headgear. Love it! "Alexa, add a reminder to bring down the western world. On Monday. Now time to Radio 2." I'm a trendy con...

Alexa, a new member of our family

Took delivery of my Amazon Echo today. Just amazing. Anyone else here got one? What's strange is that the whole family is already treating Alexa like a new family member. We can't be rude to her, we don't interrupt her, and commanding her to shut up just feels plain wrong. When I keep asking Alexa q...

Try this. You may be "richer" than you think! https://www.theguardian.com/society/datablog/interactive/2012/jun/22/how-wealthy-you-compared What a strange and interesting (and stupid) thing to fill out! We are WELL below the poverty line.  It asks you how many children over the...

..... We are not leaving the EU because of the referendum result, but because our parliament has voted overwhelmingly to do so. shows how out-of-date I am because I had not even realised the House of Lords had even voted on it yet. I live and learn. And it was ages ago you posted that our Governmen...

so the Guardian ... "...He speaks as if from the Eurostar carte blanche VIP lounge, ..." It's not called that. Its name is the Chambers Club, as I'm sure a writer in het Grauniad knows ;-) I'm not sure that some Remainers like democracy very much at all. They support the EU precisely beca...
