Re: How does the UK stop cutting off it's nose to spite it's face

So, Is the Polish government totally out of order to prefer it having control over its own destiny?
With another 5 countries trying to get into the E.U., but an E.U. pause on acceptance being pushed, the future will not be a bed of roses for Brussels! With more nations getting more back than they put in, the big losers like Germany will find it hard to justify the cost to their own electorate, which is what the UK electorate did.
France is getting tough with Belgium over their soft (invisible) border over migrants, their hypocrisy over the channel flotilla will be more blatant! MM

Re: How does the UK stop cutting off it's nose to spite it's face

hi, We should big up the problems that the E.U. hierarchy is having with Poland, where the minnow is stating emphatically that their national law takes precedent over E.U. law, with Van Leyen obviously stating the reverse!
That the Nationalist section of the Dail is trying to rack up the pressure over Ulster is a given, the ghost of Dev walking the corridors!
France is still picking on the Channel Islands as it wants to be seen as "Cock of the walk", the merry go around keeps on turning.

Hi again, Maggie has a fantastic voice & delivery, nothing like the stereotypical style attributed to folk of Afro - Caribbean background. She she deliver knowledge in a sincere way, nothing like the fake enthusiasm of many in TV land.
Astronomy has been lucky over the years, with a fair number of brilliant educators, not just presenters.
Only thing that worried me about Patrick was his way with his transport, both his bicycle and car were death-traps! TTFN MM

Re: Can You Cook & When Did You Learn?

Wow, I like it , but no. Patrick was a one off, no artificiality. I was at an astronomy course at Burton Manor, Patrick was covering the astral part and bob Turner was covering the solar stuff.
Brilliant to gaze through a telescope to inspect the sun, lots of activity with solar flares! With the right equipment it is brilliant, but cost of such gear is way beyond this poor pensioner's means.
But Patrick could simply look at an image of an eclipse and he could give you all the data, what a memory. MM

Re: Drink-drive get-out?

If a driver crashes into me that I suspect is impaired by drink or drugs I'd summon the police!
The fact that the police don't want to attend motor incidents is why that silly driver has dodged a ban. All such incidents should receive attendance, maybe all drivers involved in any incident should be tested? If it means that parties have to hang around, well so be it!
That trick of diving home an having a snoot full is as old as the hills, drivers should be obliged to refrain from topping up with a stiffener after a prang, otherwise when tested later they would risk a fail.
Just test all, so if someone has taken a drink later then it should mean a fail! Rather on the lines of a masking agent in dope testing, presence of alcohol should mean ban. After all if they need to drink to settle their nerves then they ain't fit to drive in the first place. It should require no stimulants. IGICB MM

Re: Can You Cook & When Did You Learn?

The problem with using TV for inspiration in the area of cookery is with choice of presenters? My early years were spent watching Fanny & Johnny, with the poor chap being mercilessly bullied by the "She Witch"!
But the real problem for me if I used Johnny as my role model would be keeping the monocle from falling in the G&T, something that happened to the late, great Patrick Moore when I was supping with him. But he simply hauled out on the string then sucked it clean      . TTFN MM

Re: Words worth?

So, The definition of the word "Definition" has gone, too many variables which originate from personal whims or wishes?
Language is supposed to ensure that meanings and intentions are absolutely clear. But henceforth it will mean nothing to nobody, rather like the "Smeg-Head" scene in Red Dwarf? Oversensitivity on steroids. MM
* Wow, I've been auto moderated for using a word that is similar to a fridge make? S.M.E.G. is apparently abusive?? Words such as "M*n & "W*m*N" will be expunged!

Re: Words worth?

Morning all, The areas of unease over a large proportion of the gender issue will be very evident, from issues arising in women only wards in hospitals, gender specific toilets, single sex schools, but it gets really challenging when one considers that area of total ignorance for us old codgers, the try-on in clothes stores! There is already enough evidence over the use of concealed cameras in many areas that should be safe, even homes, with controlling folk being intrusive with partners. Throw into the mix those who re-assign themselves to a group of choice?
It was bad enough when I was at school, boys only, when one was subjected to the class clown/sicko in the showers, my daughter said it was much the same at her girls school, as has been said previously children can be cruel.
But the dignity of the individual must be respected, so a debate must happen, and indeed a solution that respects all must be provided.
Sadly much conflict is occurring in sport, especially where the basic physical advantages/disadvantages are evident! Many sports could easily be open in all senses, some actually are getting towards that outcome, equine events such as racing, dressage, show-jumping and dressage do it already, after all the horse does the work? But after that we find many areas of real inequality of physical imbalance. Not just weight or else it would be simple, but it is not a level playing field. I can't see a pound for pound match of equality in boxing any time soon?
Even in cycling, the die is cast at creation when the heat is on.
But sadly too many areas in life are equal, but gender definition still intrudes, think just about the Academy Awards, all who tread the boards or who react to the "Action" call are now called gender neutral "Actors", but wait? we still retain "Best Actor/Actress" categories??
Can't be too long before the margins will be tested! Society may have moved on from the shock of April Ashley marrying the Chief Scout's son, but things still ain't hunky dory. MM

Hi, Just applied on-line to renew my licence ready for my 73rd birthday. Didn't get shot off into some money grubbing scam, yippee!
I have declared that I am under medical supervision over a benign brain tumour, so may yet get sent through the hoops??? So fingers crossed.
But I do have one particular gripe though? One get drawn into the organ donor mincer, with it being presumed that one will accede to the pressure. I say this because there is no clear route to decline??? As my body ain't perfect I think it would be a waste of time and effort, also I don't wish my family to be troubled.
My tricycles are worth re-cycling, my body bits ain't!   . TTFN MM

Re: Are there any runners who can advise me?

Hi again, My worst running nightmare was not only painful, but quite comical in the aftermath?
I was quite regular runner, reasonably quick, hilly road 10 k in sub 37 minutes, 10 miles 2 seconds over the hour, 1 hr 14 m half-m. So seasoned.
So when I found that there was a 3 mile fell race starting and finishing at Keswick I knew it would fit in with a camping family break at Troutbeck. Half mile flat, half mile up, half mile down, up and down Latrigg, just the ticket.
Out to the base front 25%, on the climb up I improved to circa front 15%, descent was interesting but was certainly in the front 20 %, then I hit the turbo to make up a few places. Happy to be mixing it with some great fell runners such as Kenny Stuart and Pauline Howarth.
Two days later I went for a loosener up the Kirkstone Pass, easy distance from the campsite.
On reaching the pub at the top I turned about to return. That was when it got comical?
I found that my legs hurt so much I couldn't run down, but even worse I found that it was excruciating to even walk down??? I ended up having to walk down backwards       . Running quickly down-hill employs the muscles in a very different way.
As I regularly did lumpy 10k's 1/2 m's it was a revelation.
At Keswick one brave/silly young man occupied the services of the St John Ambulance personnel, as on his overly hasty descent he kept on loosing his footing, outcome was massive abrasions & cuts from heel to head, ouch. Cave TTFN MM

Hi Oldjohnw, Well you ain't sitting on the fence, and rightly so. But as the heat has been applied to those who rely on your definition of ma vis a vis woman, it goes against all that the trans movement is trying to force us all to accept.
As you say vagina or prostate, they're not optional or selectable.
But I was trying to instigate debate, which happily you have all supplied. Finger crossed that I don't discover prostate issues on top of all my other stuff, but the odds ain't on my side? TTFN MM
