Re: Swindon to Torrington (Devon)

Well I'd head down to the Kennet & Avon canal (aka route 4 ncn), perhaps joining it at Devizes, taking it to a few miles beyond Bath. It's a very pleasant/flat option. I'd suggest if possible undertaking this option during the week, it's a popular route with all users. In general the surface is ...

Re: Bike for a four year old girl.

I do hear what you're saying Spaceboy, and I do understand your point. Thing is my son had a Spesh hot rock before his Islabike, and yes it was cheaper, but simply didn't have quality / geometry like the Islabike and was still fairly weighty etc. Cost is naturally a big factor for any parent, and I ...

Re: Bike for a four year old girl.

The only questioned I'd ask re Specialized / Ridgeback is how long are the cranks / brake levers, and what's the geometry / weight like? Whilst both brands have a good reputation generally, they still can't beat Islabikes IMO. if you're prepared to fork out on either brand, I'd say you'd be very wis...

Re: Bike for a four year old girl.

I'll also put a vote in for Islabikes! My lad's 13 now, he's had the Beinn 26 for just over a year now, and he's absolutely delighted with it! He's delighted because the bike bike weighs so much less, the brakes are easy to reach, and above all and his words 'I've so much more control Dad'. In a nut...

Re: Through the Lake District

Personally I'd avoid the A591, generally busy and not the widest of roads in parts. If you're heading into Cumbria via the A6 or lanes running parallel then follow this until reaching the A590 and turn left, follow for short distance and then right onto A5074 (this is a fairly quiet route and offers...

Re: CTC road signs

I'm aware of this signage, and more, but as I've already said this does not imply CTC had a legal right to place it. This topic's been raised in past on a number of occasions internally for the very reason that it would be useful if we could. On looking into the finer details though CTC didn't have ...

Re: CTC road signs

I didn't imply CTC had never placed signage, but CTC did not, and do not have a legal right to place signage on the highway other than that for the purpose of marking a temporary route / or perhaps signage pointing to a CTC event, e.g. York etc. As I said, if you wish to obtain chapter and verse I'd...

Re: CTC road signs

Alas, this is a misconception, CTC do not have the authority to put up road signs, and never actually have. If we had we'd have used the opportunity I'm sure. Signage for events including route marking's permitted, along with our cast iron signs still seen on approx 100 old inn's / cycle friendly es...

Re: Lakeland Mini tour

Nick, thanks very much for the extra info. I've been up to Stickle Tarn on a number of occasions over the years, I can relate to the section 2/3's up, but hadn't done the left turn at the top. I'll put that right next week when I get down on one knee... apparently it'll be sunny... and hopefully she...

Re: Lakeland Mini tour

I'd turn left and head to Langdale, via Coniston en route home. My only reason being it's beautiful and ODG / Langdale / Coniston just happen to be some of my favorite spots in the Lakes! Guess it's a personal thing!! From ODG it's worth the short walk to Stickle Tarn for the views down the valley! ...

Re: I'm scared of crossing the Severn Bridge on LEJOG..Discu

Still off topic... sorry Mick, you can still get pretty close I think, certainly at South Queensferry, just beyond the Hawes Pier, by the Hawes Inn although in fairness I think that's the brick pillar bits you get close to at that end... My brother's in Dunfermline so I'm that way fairly often, I'll...

Re: I'm scared of crossing the Severn Bridge on LEJOG..Discu

I must admit that I was pretty apprehensive about it, the older I've got the more the fear factor's set in. That said I decided to look at the Bridge as one of the features of my ride. When it came to the day of crossing, I rode the south side of the bridge crossing to Chepstow, and stayed firmly in...
