No they're not. There are countless small roads just off any of the main roads around the city, that have some abysmal cobbles.

All the cobbles in the city centre are wonderfully maintained and most wheels and tyres will have no problem riding over them, even to the extent that I find riding there very relaxing.

The rough cobbles out of town on the other hand....the cobbles aren't always set at a consistent height, with there being a difference of several inches at times. You'll want strong tyres and rims if you ride on these at anything over walking pace.

Never used BB30 before....no idea where to start!

I'm probably arriving really late to this party, but I've never used a BB30 bottom bracket before and I've just acquired a beautiful Cannondale CAAD10 frame which will require me to get my first one.

However, I have absolutely no idea what to get to be able to use my Ultegra Hollowtech 2 cranks.

I see there are adaptors, but can someone talk me through exactly what I need to buy to adapt.

Is fitting a BB30 generally a DIY job like square taper and external BB's, or is the necessity for a bearing press making it a shop job?

Explain like I'm five.

Re: Base for climbing TdF mountains

I'm popping down to the Alps for a couple of weeks from the 3rd of August, to fulfil a life-long dream of riding up some of the mountains made famous in Le Tour.

As my missus is not much of a cyclist & really hates any sort of hill on the few occasions I can convince her to join me on a ride, she doesn't want to come...which actually suits me just fine, I can just enjoy myself & my riding without having to worry about her.

Anyway, I've discovered this thread & it has been helpful in my planning.

I have a couple of questions though:

As much as I want to take the Colnago, I wont be able to manage the gears on the hills, so I have opted for my Croix de Fer with a 50/34 & 12-28. That should be okay, shouldn't it?
I will mainly be camping, with a hotel or B&B every few days. Kit-wise, I'm taking one of my roomier tents (a 3 person North Face,) sleeping bag, sleeping mat & cooking gear, plus other basic camp accoutrements. Riding gear, I'll take two pairs of bibs, two shirts, two socks, gloves & a cap.

What else should I be taking? It's all going in a car, so I have plenty of space.

I won't have to wear a helmet anywhere will I?

Route-wise, I've taken some of the suggestions on board from here & will be spending a few days at both Bourg & St. Jean Maurienne. The routes I have in mind are - Alpe d'huez, Croix de Fer, Glandon & Lacets Montvernier. I will move on after these to try my legs on Mont Ventoux.

Are there any other essential rides from this area that I have missed out? Would it be biting off more than I can chew if I went the long way home & went via the Pyrenees to have a bash at Tourmalet, or should I just stick to one area?

Thank you!

Re: ADVICE ON NEW SHOES

I've got a few pairs of shoes, the most expensive of which is a carbon soled pair of Lakes, which are worth a lot of money.

They don't even come close to the level of comfort of my Specialized Touring shoes that are worth a quarter of the price!

I've said I'll take one, but I'm going away for a couple of weeks from this Thursday. Can you keep mine aside, please? I don't want to miss out if it goes on general sale.

Re: Campag Record rear mech...issue?

It's not that bolt where the play is though. I can't seem to download the picture, but if you look at that that whole diagram, its the next big spring down, that I'm on about.

Edit: I've managed it, this is what I mean. http://imgur.com/m4c70Cs

Re: Campag Record rear mech...issue?

Any ideas on whether or not a 10 speed mech would work with 8 speed Ergo shifters & cassette?

Re: Campag Record rear mech...issue?

I've just stripped it all down & I'd say it might be game over for this unit.

When I removed the bolt, some rusty brown water & gunk came out. I'm not sure what I was expecting in there, but there was only a spring with a pin on each end of it and a little washer/bush thing that was sat at the bottom of the body, but belonged on the bolt.

I dismantled and de-greased the bits, cleaned out the body & re-greased everything & reassembled. There was still a fair bit of play coming from that area & some movement in the body too, from two other pins/bolts. These other pins/bolts were not adjustable & the movement felt like wear.
There has never been any clunking, just play, so I think I'm just going to write this unit off & try & find something else.

If a 10s mech would work on an 8s, I would have one right now, regardless of price, just because it would be brand new & I don't have to go to the trouble of trying to source the best condition second hand mech, that I can find.

My day has gone like this: :D :) :? :( :) :( :x :(

Re: Campag Record rear mech...issue?

I've only had the bike the mech is on this year, but it was second hand, so goodness knows what mieage it has done prior to coming to live here! Visually, it looks brilliant...almost unmarked, but that is hardly a reliable indicator.

I will try tightening up that bolt, but I expect that it may be game over for this mech, as you say.

I have already looked for replacement mechs on eBay & they are all a mixed bag....if I were to get a more modern 10 speed carbon mech, how would that operate with everything else being 8 speed?

Campag Record rear mech...issue?

When I set up the gears on my bike, everything is perfect when it is on the stand, but when I get it out on the road, when going up a steep hill & using my lowest gear, the rear mech slightly catches the spokes & I can hear it making a tinkling sound. If I make an adjustment to the downtube barrel adjuster, I can get the sound to go away, but when I go back to my second or third gear, the chain slightly rubs on the next largest sprocket, forcing me to fiddle with the barrel adjuster again to get rid of that noise.

I noticed on the way back home from my ride this morning that when in my lowest gear, the cage doesn't appear to be perfectly straight & the lowest jockey wheel might be bent inwards?
There also appears to be a certain amount of play from the bolt that attaches the mech cages to the mech body. Is that normal, because to my mind that seems to be the cause of the problem, unless I'm missing something?

Is it just a case of tightening up that bolt....or something else?

I use & highly recommend Finish Line Teflon grease for hubs. It is also what Cytech recommend for hubs.
