Re: Working hours, start 06:30

I used to work in dairy farming where we started the milking at 0530. No commute of course because I lived in the bothy and worked a 13 day fortnight. Later I worked as a postman and for a while started at 0430 with a 4 mile commute but later got a lie in to 0600 start. Subsequently I had a job for ...

Re: One Time Pass Code?

Calmac ferry company have a system where the person taking your booking is not allowed to take your card details. You are instead transferred to a “ secure site” where you enter your details on your keypad. I only use this system when my local office is closed because I have never yet managed to com...

Re: Trends in windy days

Last winter certainly seemed to have more gales for longer periods on the Scottish west coast. I have not kept records but there were certainly more ferry cancellations. It has been alleged that it is the skippers who are increasingly windy but they are dictated to by management and cannot sail abov...

Re: Bike route gate size

I agree with the straight run in. Sustrans route 78 has a few nasty narrow right angle bends alongside the main road. Dangerous as I came off on one fortunately against a rockface rather than into the carriageway. Not hurt but legs got tangled in the bike and it took a while to get up again.A concer...

Re: Vitamin B12 dosage

Thanks for the link tim-b. Food for thought. My blood get checked at the same time as the B12 injection for a variety of things and has also been checked recently by a consultant for other possible problems related to I think my body just wearing out. On the whole I think I get reasonably well monit...

Re: Bike route gate size

My Ice Adventure could get through 32 inches which I think is 82cm. The height you mention would be ok as my flagpole is easily removed.

Re: Vitamin B12 dosage

I get a needle stuck in my arm for a B12 injection by our NHS every 12 weeks approx. Apparently some locum GP noticed that my B12 levels were a bit low and prescribed this. I am not vegan or vegetarian so have no real idea why.

Re: !!!!! North Coast 500 . . . . . . by car !!!!!

The Ullapool music festival which has been going for years is being abandoned after this year. Participants in this event say they cannot get accommodation because of NC500 as everything is booked so far in advance.
Unintended consequence but may not be the only casualty.

Re: antisocial parking the norm?

Those with shiny new cars often use “parent and child” spaces as these are wider and their nice new toy less likely to get cosmetic damage.

Re: What3words

We got bits of wood handed out by somebody advertising Jaguar/Landrover. Immediate reaction was shove it in the stick basket but refrained and just found it again. Easy to remember? I looked at it 5 minutes ago and it is complete nonsense which I have already forgotten and doubt that I will ever rem...

Re: To buy another boat...

To me a 30 foot sailing cruiser would be a bit pretentious. My biggest boat was a Westerly Centaur. Built in 1979 it was more solidly built than the later ones. My last boat was all of 18ft long and actually more useful for my sailing. My mooring got overtaken by Crown Estates and sense went out the...

Re: Daytime lights

I never use daytime lights on a bike but on a short section of road I use I have lights on my trike. The road is in a 30 mph zone but mostly ignored and while the LGVs who use this road are ok the 4 x4s used by residents are often not ok. I have to make a right turn at a T junction and many drivers ...

Re: People shouting 'left' 'right' etc on a cylce path whilst approaching from behind

I am with Tigerbiten on this. I could be looking at something off to one side and not checking my mirrors. I cycle for pleasure not to race from point to point so I have no problem with people passing but a bit of warning is always welcome. Don’t bother suggesting I am careless not constantly checki...

I have to shorten any Brompton chain as my chainring is smaller than standard. Not a problem and gives me a few spare links tho’ I have never needed them.

Re: Do you have a "grab bag"?

I always have an overnight bag plus sleeping bag in the car if off on the mainland. Weather and ferries can be dodgy sometimes so no problem if not able to get home. If travelling on foot always have emergency supply of medication for same reason. At home I have a “ hospital bag” as a couple of time...
