Re: The Funniest Post Ever
I used to have one of those Primus stove carriers. It was much used and travelled many miles. I still have the stove but I regret selling the clip to somebody who wanted to make a bike more “authentic” for some unknown reason.

Re: Island Cycling
It is not quite correct to say no ferry cancellations or delays today.
The Oban/Craignure route has fendering problems at Craignure which are causing some problems for MV Isle of Mull.
Supposed to be fixed by Friday but we have heard that story before.
Being realistic we have been dogged by problems and cancellations all winter.

Re: Stricter eye tests drivers > 70
As an ancient dodder who leans on supermarket trollies and has to walk with a stick I get a bit annoyed when people think I am not quite all right to be out on my own.
I regularly drive and my eyesight and coordination is perfectly ok. My eyes have been tested and cataracts have been attended to.
I admit to being told I am very fit for my age as I still cycle regularly albeit with a recumbent trike.
Age is not the limiting factor it may have once been and many much younger people than myself should not be driving at any age.

In the “ good old days” before helmets many used sowesters along with their cape when it was raining.

Old charts are in fathoms but anything modern is meters and instruments like depth gauges etc are all metric.

Re: Remember having Ever Ready and going to
When I worked as a postman many years ago we were issued with clip on Ever Ready type lamps with clips to hang on our tunics and I also had that type lamp for my post office bike as I was a cycling postman.

Re: Kilometers or Miles?
For distance I use imperial ie miles but for weight and volume it is metric. Height and depth when diving is metric. All a bit mixed up but it seems to work for me.

Re: Only One Kidney
I had a kidney removed in 1981 due to a tumour. Since then I have lived a pretty normal life and while I have had to give up two wheels due to balance problems I now use a recumbent trike regularly.
In the intervening years I cycle camped extensively and nobody ever suggested I should not.

The Highwayman by David E.T.Bell
Based on articles he wrote for the Ayrshire Post in the 1930,s
On ordinary bikes they travelled off road mainly in the Scottish Borders but did tour further afield.
Illustrates what can be done with no fancy modern equipment and ordinary cycling gear of the time.

Re: We are experiencing high levels of calls at this time…
I live in an area where there is relatively small population of about 3000 swollen in summer by tourist numbers.
It is only possible to get a GP appointment by phone and the doctor then phones back to decide whether to see you or just do a phone consultation.
I have never had to wait more than a few seconds before getting connected to reception who sometimes ask how urgent the matter is and then give a time for a call back.
Only once did I have to wait much beyond the given time and that was because there had been an emergency needing attention. I did get another appointment later the same day tho’.

I am not an SNP member but do not approve of Westminster ruling us.irc wrote: ↑25 Nov 2022, 1:19pmJust because you don't like it doesn't wish it away. The SNP accept the meeting took place. They have an iron grip on public bodies in Scotland. If the BBC did not have solid proof there would have been a statement from the NHS and SNP denying charges were discussed.ambodach wrote: ↑25 Nov 2022, 1:04pm Re charging rich patients in Scotland.
It is SNP policy to have the NHS free at point of use.
Everything else is allegation and nobody can pinpoint exactly where this came from so the assumption is that it is simply BBC spin. I no longer believe anything from BBC Scotland as their bias is so blatent.
What the SNP actually said was
"The Scottish Government said the meeting was between a small number of NHS directors."
https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics ... million-vn
But I guess you must be an SNP supporter. So I won't convince you.
Next you'll be telling us about the value for money and speedy ferry replacement programme.
The charging issue appears ti be a suggestion from an individual at a Borders Health Board meeting who is probably in that area a Tory and was laughed out at the meeting.
The ferry issue is largely down to the shipbuilder and the yard would certainly have shut down otherwise with the resultant loss of skills and jobs. The overrun in money pales into insignificance when compared to some of the dodgy deals at Westminster but that is of no interest to anyone and is just shrugged off.
We will obviously never agree on politics.

Re: Cyclist In Collision Low Sunlight A Factor.
I ride a trike and my current one is not suitable for offroad so I could take the trike in the car about 12 miles away to a safer bit but this is not often easy and certainly not environmentally friendly.mjr wrote: ↑27 Nov 2018, 1:24pmI assume that means you have walking routes in other directions, so couldn't you walk the bike out along one and start from wherever they go?ambodach wrote:With low sun my only routes for heading out cycling head roughly SE straight into the blinding sun. If I have difficulty seeing I have no confidence in dozy drivers so go for a walk instead.
Times like this, I'm glad of the kerb between cycleway and carriageway around here, even if it's only a low one. At least I'll probably hear a blind motorist scrape their vehicle up it and have time to hit the ditch!

Re: Witnessing the end of the NHS
The story about NHS Scotland allegedly considering charging wealthy patients is denied and is just a fabrication to cause political trouble.
Anything from BBC should be regarded with suspicion.
