Re: Stop Headway

I was in Melbourne in January 2011 and keen to try their "Boris" style bike hire scheme. Helmets are compulsory and as tourists/other city centre users are unlikely to be carrying their helmets around the level of usage was incredibly low. While I was there the city authorities introduced ...

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Hi sorry to hear of your fall . I was hit by a van on 30.6.2011. Result broken femur , but I had a dynamic hip screw repair . I was in hospital for 5 days , would of been shorter but I had to have a blood transfusion , so it put things back a day . They got me up out of bed on day two, but not full...

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Thanks goatwarden - I dont know where I would find any of your advice or comments insulting - I have read the whole thread and also started another thread in March 2011 to which you contributed some useful and encouraging thoughts. I am certainly aware of the seriousness of hip injury, having been ...

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Not had any foot swelling myself but vyrnwy73 earlier in this thread reported he had it and describes it as "not unexpected" by physio. So I should get it checked out but wouldn't panic :?

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Thanks Marlowe I was 59 when I fractured my hip after being knocked off my bike by an 85 year old at fault motorist. Surgeon told me that if I had been 70 he would have gone for THR. I am not a competitive cyclist - the limit of my aspirations in what I hoped to be a healthy retirement were short to...

Marlowe wrote; We should actually count ourselves lucky that this procedure exists, otherwise we would be faced with a hip replacement, and then it would be curtains Was a bit concerned to read this - my understanding is that prognosis for hip replacement surgery (including getting back on the bike)...

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Had 3 screws removed on 26 June in the hope this would relieve pain I have suffered since hip fracture in March 2011. Pain and immobility much worse than ever and a deterioration in leg length difference ( now around 4cm). I am now to have a total hip replacement on 18 September. My target now is to...

Thanks Teddylegs - op is now scheduled for 26 June - delay mainly due to consultant's holiday commitments. I am sure it will be worth the wait :?

Re: Cannulated Screw hip repair

Broke hip March 2011 when knocked off my bike by a car. Screws fitted. Received really good advice and support on a different forum site (thanks snibgo and goatwarden). The joint collapsed leaving screws sticking into soft tissue causing severe pain and reduced mobility - even today I am in as much ...

Re: Recovery from hip surgery

Thanks Goatwarden. Sleep is the only immediate issue - I am relatively pain free now and days are being filled with IPad, crosswords (puzzles) and a bit of telly. But the nights - I got less than an hour last night through failure to sleep on back. I am going to scour other parts of the forum to rea...

Re: Recovery from hip surgery

Yes snibgo I am on an hourly exercise routine and getting on fine with crutches. The pain has really subsided to the extent that night is only issue, with sleep. I'm going to try the pillow - I'd assumed I had to lie with head raised really high and legs flat. I am finding the CTC forum immensely go...

Re: Recovery from hip surgery

Thanks snibgo I had looked at this thread before and thought it was dormant. It certainly has some really helpful info, including your own contributions. I also had a lumbar injection which didn't fully take, then general anaesthetic. At home now, 7 days after surgery, pain is minor irritant during ...

Re: Recovery from hip surgery

Thanks CU. I have been really pleased with the Super Galaxy which I have until recently used only for weekend excursions, shopping and Charity Rides (Manchester to Liverpool, Manchester to Blackpool). My wife will not be retiring for a few years and the dream was to occupy myself planning and doing ...

Recovery from hip surgery

Bumped off bike by car on Friday 11th March I fractured a femur which was pinned on the following day. Discharged from hospital 2 days ago I would welcome any cyclists' advice on what to expect from here specifically in relation to cycling prospects. I am male, 60 next week and retired at Christmas....
