Re: Bicycle theft common on JOGLE/LEJOG?

Most of the time you are not riding through big cities, where bike theft is rife. We did leave our bikes in the centre of Glasgow for about an hour during the afternoon but they were fine (we removed the panniers and had decent locks). It depends on how much sightseeing you are doing along the way, but most of the time you’ll be riding your bike, or you be at a food stop, where bikes can be kept in sight (we often bought sandwiches and eat them on a bench somewhere) or you’ll be at your overnight stop, which would hopefully have secure bike parking.

If OP is diabetic, what is blood sugar when this happens ? (I maybe naively assume diabetics have blood glucose testing capability.

Many people with diabetes do and many don't. Measuring instantaneous blood glucose is enormously easier than it used to be. That should help both in individual victims of bonking and in working out what's happening in general. Much to my surprise this doesn't seem to have led to much increase in our understanding of the latter.

I am, type 2, thanks, never even thought to say that

100% THIS is the great advice I get here, and thanks ALL

I will take a blood check kit next time and see
What medication are you on, if any? I’m also Type 2 and I’ve recently been put on Gliclazide and was given a blood glucose monitor because Gliclazide can cause hypos. I was told not to let my blood sugar drop below 4mmol. If it did, then I should drink some orange juice or eat a few jelly babies. I’ve only had a hypo once and that wasn’t while I was out on my bike.

Re: General racing chitchat

I thought, as with the Tour of Flanders, that the women’s Paris-Roubaix was far more exciting than the men’s. In both races the result was in doubt, right up to the finish line. And a great ride from Pfeifer Georgi to be part of the race winning break and get 3rd in the sprint. She actually crossed to the break entirely under her own steam, with no help from passenger Balsamo.

Nice to see another Brit, besides Lizzie, who is fighting for wins in top races.

Re: Techniques for braking on steep descents

As a heavy (110kg) rider who sometimes rides in the Peak District, there’s a few things I do to mitigate heavy braking. Pick gentler descents - after a death- defying, white knuckle descent of Curbar Edge, I now go down either the main Chesterfield road into Baslow, or down Froggatt Edge or carry on to Owler Bar and drop into Hathersage. A long, swooping descent is more fun than constantly having to be on the brakes on a steep one. Instead of dropping down through Bonsall to Cromford, I carry on down to the Hollybush and drop-down the Via Gelia instead. Yes, there are more cars, but you are going faster so you more able to keep up with traffic.

Also, don’t gather too much speed and then try and slam on the brakes at the bottom. Like an oil tanker, you take a lot of stopping!

Re: Dropper post - aid to mounting for stiff person?

Updating this thread. My son in law is running a dropper post on his gravel/winter bike, which he uses for club rides. The saddle drops down about 5cm when the dropper is activated, which is done via a mechanical lever on the handlebars. He’s managed to route the cable through the frame on his bike, which is a Marin Gestalt. It would certainly aid someone of limited flexibility to get onto the bike.

Re: When did a bike refurb get so tech and expensive?

I transitioned away from Campag 15 years ago because of the lack of availability of parts and spares. Shimano stuff is widely available everywhere, Campag not so. I’d been using Campag since the 70’s, but they’ve failed to keep up with the competition IMO.

The other rule of thumb though is- don't go cycling on the day of a major football match, esp one involving England. Even less of a good idea.
Alternatively, do go cycling whilst the football match is actually being played, as the roads will be deserted. Make sure you are back before the end of the game though, especially if the favoured team lose.

They might keep you clean and dry but my cycling club mates wouldn’t be very impressed by those, as they’d get a face full of road muck. You obviously don’t ever ride in a group.

Re: towbar bike rack's license plate

You need your driving licence or other proof of identity and your vehicle registration document (V5C). I bought a new rear number plate for my car. A local Motor Factor will do it if you don’t want to use Halfords, and they’ll probably be cheaper too. I paid £10 for a new plate, Halfords charge £18.

Why is it UK and EU, and not UK and Europe. What if you want to catch a train in Norway or Switzerland, are you expected to start a separate thread?

Yes, there’s still a big archive of past events. Just had a look and you can still get the whole of the 23/24 cyclocross season, and the Tour Down Under is still on there.

Can’t help with the Firestick, as I watch on iPad and Apple TV.

Not recently, but I ordered a new wheel from Decathlon and it took about 3 weeks to come. I presumed it must have been sent from France.

Re: GPX devices...Garmin alternative

Do you have a tablet or smartphone? The more modern Garmins have file transfer over Bluetooth which is far easier than having to drop files into a folder. If you are determined not have a Garmin, then a refurbed V1 Wahoo Bolt can be bought for around £100.

https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id ... 1VEALw_wcB

Or you can get 2nd hand ones from EBay slightly cheaper. But you’ll still probably need a tablet or smartphone to connect to it.

Bryton GPS units are quite cheap, but I’ve no experience of using one.

Re: Brompton case / luggage storage at Schiphol

It’s certainly possible to use the Airport luggage storage facility, but it’s not cheap. I would imagine it would count as hold luggage, so it’s 9 euros a day.

https://www.schiphol.nl/en/at-schiphol/ ... e-storage/

We used it to store our suitcase at the airport (non-cycling trip), whilst we spent the day in Amsterdam centre before catching our flight home in the evening.
