Re: Cycling for weight loss - Advice sought

Many long distance runners turn to cycling due to joint injuries etc. That said diet is absolutely the quickest way to lose weight. Cycling wise what works for me without changing diet is increasing distance. My weight losing tipping point is 45 miles. Regular steady 45 mile plus will result in a st...

Re: La Velo Francette (La Rochelle to Ouistreham). Opinions?

I did Ouistreham to Domfront as part of this route before veering off onto EV4 It was well signposted and consisted of quiet roads and railway line. Its the V43 I believe. Having previously come up from Spain via Niort (through that area from La Rochelle up to Cherbourg peninsula ) accommodation and...

Re: Pillow

I'm also interested in a decent pillow. I've marginally improved comfort on cheapo inflatables by sticking them in a normal pillow case and will probably continue to do so but the last one went pop somewhere in France, so need a replacement soonest.

Re: Loire Valley Tours this August ....

I would use Eurovelo 6 as a template. The stage here from Nantes to Nevers will take you along the Loire and is doable within your time period at about 530km or you could shorten it and start at Angers. http://www.eurovelo.com/en/eurovelos/eurovelo-6/les-etapes/nantes-nevers The cycle route is fully...

Re: Bikes on cross channel ferries

Are any precautions necessary for bike transport on the cross channel ferries, in terms of how they are secured on the vehicle decks? In other words, should I perhaps be thinking of bringing some lagging to protect the frame for example? Or anything else? It'll be a carbon frame. I'm particularly t...

Frowned upon down here in Dorset, I would also check the beach isn't NT owned either as they get really narked.

That said below the high water mark I believe is owned by the crown - best of luck with that :D

Re: Platypus wine "bottle"

Decanting into a water bottle as mentioned above is a great idea. Many shops abroad are also doing 500ml vino bottles if you look close enough. I hate waste but struggle (don't even try) to finish a bottle of red without some assistance when on tour...no issue at home mind .

Re: Cyclists killed riding LeJog

"Fear from the rear" is overblown. Most motorist-cyclist collisions are T-bones, left hooks, right crosses, sideswipes and doorings, plus about three-quarters are around junctions. Do we have a link to prove this ? Are the Home Office now sharing this Information. Unless it's an Injury / ...

You can always get the ferry from The Hook of Holland to Harwich, which is much closer to Heathrow than Newcastle.

I guess you are touring Europe ?

Re: Tour bike setup and Equipment

A hardtail MTB is ideal for touring. I built up an old Raleigh MTB for £200 (inc wheelset / new crank etc/ tyres / gearing ) and did 1500 miles down to Switzerand and back . I changed the bars for butterfly bars - really comfortable after weeks in the saddle I'm still using my original cheap Altura ...

Re: Your plans for 2019 - make me jealous?

Its that time of year when the planning cogs start turning over in the brain.Love it.

I really haven't a clue. I might do a simple Santander or Bilbao to St Malo / UK or Dorset to Scotland and back. I'm leaning towards the former.

Re: What tours have you done? What do you want to do?

I decided to go on a little bike ride after finding my wife cheating on me. I packed my bags up(panniers) 2 on the front 2 on the back grabbed a tent and sleeping bag and took a plane ride to Bergen In Norway. From here I headed into the snowy mountains and made my way over to Oslo. After feeling a...

Re: Santiago de Compostella

I second https://cycle.travel/ I have used it to link sections of various Eurovelo routes in Europe. As a matter of fact the suggested routes are often better than the original Eurovelo routes :D . I would never rigidly stick to any of the "official routes" - just use them as a guide. They...

Re: MTB rider killed by hunter in Alps, France

Welcome to Eurovelo 6 I took this west of Orleans on the major EV6 cycling route that was full of cyclists, walkers and children. Prior to this picture something resembling a war zone was happening either side of the cycle path over a distance of 5-10 miles from the city. I actually saw people aimin...
