Re: Advice on jerseys

The implication here seems to be that riders of no matter what size should wear a road racing jersey. IMO it's a misconception.

Re: Covid-19 : 2nd Lockdown 2020 : 3rd Lockdown 2021

Harry has said he's flying back to the UK for the funeral ... (etc)
This seems to cover it:
Mourners coming from outside England

If you have travelled to England from any country that is not exempt from the requirement to self-isolate, you are required to self-isolate from arrival and for the first full 10 days after you arrive. However, you can leave your place of self-isolation in limited circumstances, including on compassionate grounds. This includes attending a funeral of a household member, a close family member or a friend (if neither household member or close family member can attend the funeral).

You must continue to self-isolate at all other times.

If you are arriving from a country that is not exempt from the requirement to self-isolate, you may be able to leave self-isolation at an earlier stage if you have participated in the Test to Release for International Travel Scheme.

Re: Humber Bridge closed to cyclists & pedestrians indefinitely

... The bridge board is made up of representatives from North Lincs, North East Lincs, Hull and East Riding Councillors. ...
Not necessarily the best way to get anything pressing handled well.

Re: Humber Bridge closed to cyclists & pedestrians indefinitely

In terms of separating commuters from people who may be likely to jump off the bridge, it might be much easier to organise something that worked in practice, than something which would cover every eventuality on paper, but so much depends on staffing levels.

Anybody who regularly commutes by bike will see loads of the same commuters most days, often at almost exactly the same place on their journey. I've no idea of how the Humber Bridge is staffed but if the same people are observing passing traffic on some rota system, then regular cyclists and pedestrians will be familiar. Others won't and they are the ones needing more attention. Within their number the sightseers and one-off touring cyclists and hikers I presume will be a majority. It's been pointed out that CCTV has helped identify those at risk on busy railway station platforms; perhaps it would be even more effective with the fewer people on this bridge. Of course, there would still be the matter of the long distance spanned by the bridge.

Re: The end of Gift Aid

Part of the T&Cs for what is essentially a season ticket to Chatsworth House:
Friends of Chatsworth Gift Aid scheme

The Chatsworth House Trust can claim gift aid on Silver Friends memberships. The Gift Aid scheme allows charities to reclaim 25p on every £1 you give as a membership subscription. If you are a tax payer please complete the Gift Aid declaration below. This will allow us to increase the value of your donation by a quarter at no extra cost to yourself. I agree to Chatsworth House Trust reclaiming tax on the enclosed membership subscription and on any donations I make in the future or have made in the past four years. ...

This can cost up to £195 depending on how many people are on the ticket

Re: The end of Gift Aid

I believe that a lot of the stately homes that admit paying visitors are owned by charitable trusts ie there are more charities involved besides the NT. This is another tax-efficient wheeze.

I still say, I've never seen that information panel before this update.

Re: Information Message

If you have never seen it before, then you have seen it now after performing an action you have not done before. I usually start with the "unread posts." When I've done, which usually includes leaving some unread, I click to mark all as read and it confirms that on that screen. for a couple of seconds. ie not that information message.

I think, but I'm not sure, that the information message only comes up if you mark all read from the index screen.

Here's what it looks like for a couple of seconds if you do it from the unread posts screen. Same info, displayed in a different manner

Re: Does Anyone Know If This Is A Good Buy? Second Hand Bike

Try to find out a bit about the bike's history from the seller. Loads of bikes are bought - especially from big retailers - by people who ride them once, find it's harder than they expected - especially if they experience the burning buttocks - and shove the bike in the back of the garage till they come to terms with never riding it and get rid. ie Bike is almost as new. If it's been hammered commuting in all weathers, then the seller may have decided it's time to get rid while it's still rideable. The vendor's partner may let some info slip in casual conversation.

Condition is everything.

Re: Information Message

It's one of those Catch 22s

This feature has been there forever - or at least for as long as I can remember. It confirms that the instruction has been executed. Had it disappeared in in the recent update or another, it would have been one of those indispensable features to be reinstated as a matter of urgency. IMO

Re: should politics be banned on the forum?

The following is perhaps pedantry on my part
politics

[ˈpɒlɪtɪks]

NOUN

the activities associated with the governance of a country or area, especially the debate between parties having power.

synonyms:

government · local government · affairs of state · public affairs · diplomacy · party politics
activities aimed at improving someone's status or increasing power within an organization.

Where does that come from? I cannot see anything more recent than 6 April on the bridge www.

Found this in the Humber Live link
... in the meantime, people needing to cross the bridge for work by foot or cycle will be asked to phone the bridge board offices to provide their details in advance.
