Re: Americanisms

The French would stop this pretty quickly. Why don't we? Language lives. It's good. (Caveat: one American phrase, "I could care less", is clearly 100% of bonkers and there's no excuse for that ;).) "I couldn't care less" means exactly the same thing! The UK English language is a...

Re: Messenger Bags - Chrome Citizen

Depends what your hauling?
ALso, Chrome bags are an narrow envelope design which may/not suit. I traded my Metropolis model for a Pac Designs bag and am very happy!

Re: heat mat, between stove and pan (burnt porridge)

I've used a tin lid as a diffuser (Ti pot with wood/meths stove) to cook porridge/rice. Cheap and cheerful! :D

Re: Airline carry-on baggage

Which airline? I flew with Emirates with my Brompton packed and declared as golf clubs. Their policy don't consider bikes as exercise or sporting equipment but golf clubs are acceptable. The check-in girl didn't bat an eyelid!
As AP says, wear all your heavy clothing.

Re: Carradice Super C front and rear panniers

This thread just made me realise ALL my bike luggage is made by Carradice: 1980s front rack bar bag (l had a Super C with Klick-fix mounts but much prefer the older style), 1990s F+R Super C's, 2000s Nelson low saddle long flap (try saying that after a few scrumpys!) Fab company with a great product...

Re: Brompton - good or gimic?

If the fold and portability are key requirements, the B is hard to beat. After some deliberation, l took my B over my other bikes to Hong Kong, scroll down near bottom here . Was the best decision, as l can take on all public transport, ferries, etc, and the compact fold is less cumbersome in high d...

Re: Compact or triple?

If it helps, l have a older Daytona 9spd Med rear mech which mates well with a 50x40x30_14-28 block.

Re: Smoking

A roll up certainly helped me up the hills, sometimes even stopping mid-way for a look at the scenery. Haven't missed it since l quit (again) though.
Then again, smoking a pack of Gitanes didn't stop those early tour riders.

Re: Folding bikes on planes

You're best checking with the airline as all operators have different policies. Since 9-11, hand luggage allowances have shrunk size-wise and l doubt they'll let you on with a disassembled bike frame! I will be flying with Emirates to Asia and my Brompton will be in the hold as sporting equipment.

Re: cycle locks

I had one of those alarm locks. idea was to use it for touring, ditching the heavy d-lock. the thing would go off regularly and at the most inopportune moments. It suffered a major design fault as when it was triggered it would beep a warning and then go off anyway. I'm back to d- and cable locks.
