Re: rack failure / obsolete spec.: on holiday
Hope you got it sorted out. I had a couple of Blackburn racks break under that childseat adapter. No drama but a few of the struts failed and when I investigated the new creaking sound...Couldn't find a "normal" rack to replace them (weight limits seemed too low or they advised against clamping things to them) so I ended up getting a Dutch bike rack which was rated up to about 40kg and came with the right "window" to attach the childseat and so didn't need the adapter any more.

Re: Transporting children
I use a followme tandem attachment which attaches a child's bike to the rear axle. You can then also fit a child seat. At the moment my 5 year old uses the followme and the three year old is in the child seat. He may outgrow the child seat soon but I think yepp make some seats for older children and/ or the older may be about ready by then to cycle on her own.

Re: Two kids, one long bike?
Another possibility is a followme attachment. I've been using this for about a year now with a younger child in a rear child seat and the 4 year old riding her bike on a followme attachment behind us.

Re: 29er mudguards
Sks now do a 28in 65mm bluemels which are listed on their website. I bought some from germany (bike-components.de I think) for a surly ogre with 2.3in tyres. Front fitted fairly easily. Rear was more problematic and I struggled to get them to bend fully down to the chain stay bridge. I ended up hacking a bit off and bodging it so that it gives decent but not full coverage. I dare say someone more technically minded/patient could do a better job.

Re: Really Useful Bikes?
This question actually prompted me to register as I had a very good experience with them. Only bought a child seat so not a big-ticket item but they were very helpful at dealing with queries on the phone and dispatched it the next day. Thought it was impressive for what is clearly a small outfit.
