Re: Old tourists

Good to read this.
I am now 77 and feeling fine but good to hear I am not alone dropping mileage. I do feel a bit guilty about looking at b and b and hotels instead of camping but so good not carrying so much stuff

Re: Avenue Verte (French section)

I have cycled bits from Dieppe when riding the Dieppe Raid which is a great weekend.
Cycled down to Swiss Normandie on the Francette in a heatwave using Caen and spent a few days cycling the area.
The surface was really good but stock up on water and bites as you will need to turn off into villages.
I like the idea of the above route then swinging across to St Malo.
Roll on summer.

Re: Herne Bay

I really enjoyed the coastal bit of the Viking Way but either I got the cross country bit wrong or it was ok but the ride next to the sea made up for it.
Easy to put on weight with this ride as stacks of tempting cafe stops.

Re: Holiday insurance

My choice is to comply with the helmet rule and avoid complications down the line. My main interest was the third party aspect which was reassuringly covered.
Just booked three weeks so investigating day rides round Dalyan.

Re: Holiday insurance

Thanks, I knew I was covered by my health insurance as long as I wore a helmet so no problem. Thanks for clearing up the third party aspect which is a good plus to being a member.

Holiday insurance

I often hire a bike in Turkey and know that my health insurance is valid if I wear a helmet.
Does my cycling uk insurance cover me for any third party claim or can I notify them to gain cover.
This would also apply to short trips to Europe.
Hopefully not a stupid question but a friend had her sons accident denied and it cost tens of thousands to get him home with a broken pelvis.

Re: Route to Türkiye from UK

Just a thought. What about looking at a ferry from France to Italy then ferry to Greece. Maybe this is not what you want but it will give a fast route. Love Türkiye so enjoy.

Have cycled in snow and ice but you lot have convinced me that I really am a soft southerner. Will get out soon though.

Re: First ride in four months

This topic has really given me the kick up the backside I needed. Not ridden for months due to a variety of reasons. Well in the minus temperature at the moment so will wait for it to move up a bit but you guys have definitely helped move my butt.

Re: Your favourite simple bike

I love my old rockhopper.
I fitted surly rigid forks replacing suspension, butterfly bars and mudguards and it comes in at around 13 kilo so quite light. Just replace drive train but wish I had converted to nexus hub but too late now.

Re: Does a Brompton fit in a Toyota Yaris?

Take the bike and try it.
I have known one guy to takes his golf clubs and another to take his fishing gear along.
The second friend brought a fiesta and the stuff wouldn’t fit so he sold the car hence his determination to make sure it fitted in the next car.Seemed a bit extreme but he did make a fair bit of money match fishing.

Re: Your most enabling cycling books …

In Turkey on holiday and picked Pam Goodall book on cycling the world and it was making me think of autumnal days in the Surrey Lanes and further afield.
Maybe that makes it inspiring but certainly a good read.

Sorry for the confusion but I will certainly take some zip ties to cover a multitude of ills.

Re: Cycling, is there a factor for how liberating ?

For me I pass a good view in the car and no chance of stopping to sketch or birdwatch.
The bike allows me to stop, pull over and look at whatever caught my attention. Walking is fine but on the bike I can quickly get to the best bits with not much effort.

Re: Bike hire turkey

Good point.
I think I should have worded it differently.
Just that when I tour I have quite a few self help bits and will feel odd just heading off for 20 miles or so without stuff or tools.
Will take a cafe lock and ask the hire company what happens if I get a mechanical failure but fingers crossed.
