Re: Back to Winter weather here on Skye - 25th April

Thanks for that. I'm not surprised, it was probably in anticipation of a visit from me! For many years I've been travelling to NW Scotland for the first week in May. The last five years I've been touring on my bike mainly on the islands. For many of those years I've been lucky with the weather and ...

Re: VSF FAHRRADMANUFAKTUR - TX-1000 Rohloff. Thoughts please

IME if you build with good quality DB spokes (of the correct gauge(s)) you almost invariably get a better, stronger wheel than with PG spokes; for any given wheel loading the cyclic stresses at the hub and the rim are reduced when you use DB spokes vs PG ones, and are less again when you use more s...

Re: VSF FAHRRADMANUFAKTUR - TX-1000 Rohloff. Thoughts please

I suppose the question that needs to be asked is what you intend to use it for OP, as you haven't said. Until you specify, it is hard to say whether this bike is a good choice or not. It is a bit like asking whether a certain car is good, it all depends on the circumstances. A hatchback may be good...

Re: VSF FAHRRADMANUFAKTUR - TX-1000 Rohloff. Thoughts please

Gattonero, I beg to differ. Someone on this very forum has had problems with a Rohloff shifter, granted not the hub, but they had to cut short a tour because of it, Rohloff shifters not being something easy to pick up just anywhere. I don't think they knew it was a shifter problem until they had re...

Re: VSF FAHRRADMANUFAKTUR - TX-1000 Rohloff. Thoughts please

The dyno hub is arguably the best. The hub gears are probably the best. The front light is a well thought of unit. There is some top end kit there, partly justifying the high price. The whole is a bit of a tank, verging on the bomb-proof. If that is appealing, it looks like an impressive bike. (Too...

VSF FAHRRADMANUFAKTUR - TX-1000 Rohloff. Thoughts please?

Any thoughts please on this well equipped German touring bike: https://www.fahrradmanufaktur.de/katalog/expedition-2016/tx-1000-rohloff-speedhub-14-gang-hs22 Comes with Magura HS22, hydraulic rim brakes including Brakebooster which means nothing to me. The Rigida Andra/Ryde 30 rims get decent review...

Re: Western Isles forewarn of Surface Dress Treatment WC 12

The roads intended for treatment will not be circulated. The works would be approved by the local Councillors but would not be publicly advised.

Skip the Isles for a couple of months or run the gauntlet. Take heart, f it rains the works will not be undertaken.

Western Isles forewarn of Surface Dress Treatment WC 12 May

The Western Isles have highlighted their intentions to undertake hot tar and rolled chipping road repairs with effect from next week. Uist - 2 weeks starting 12th May. Harris - the following 2 weeks. Lewis - the subsequent 2 weeks. Please beware that this treatment process results in short term brak...

Re: Uig Skye, Parking

Hi Andy, The landward (Council) car park has restricted parking but this isn't enforced. There can be a bigger turnaround of cars later in the season which would make me nervous given its a smallish car park. Things are meantime still relatively quiet traffic wise here on Skye. Alternatively, and my...

Re: Outer Hebrides

When its wet and windy you tend to realize how open to the elements the Western Isles actually is. Don't bank on bus shelters and public toilets etc for shelter - they are few and far between. Please beware of strong side gusts if you use cleats. I have been blown off the road and have experienced 3...

Re: Macpac Minaret - still as good?

[quote="ripslashtear"]Hi
Yes the minaret is still excellent. Easy to pitch, excellent materials and bombproof groundsheet tougher than any I have used.

That will do very nicely for me Alan. Minaret ordered.

Re: Macpac Minaret - still as good?

Hi Pete, I agree, sometimes we build things up too much which mostly ends in tears. I followed the pack - Terra Nova Lazer 2, which offered a bit of extra room for a solo cyclist with 4 panniers, then I looked at the Ti kirby grip like pegs and the crisp packet groundsheet and the "Emperors new...
