Re: safe to eat old eggs?

To br fair, it's not really to check that the egg is OK to eat, but to avoid cracking open a rotten egg and stinking the kitchen out - you ain't going to eat a rotten egg after all. I do still do it for eggs that I've had a bit too long.

Re: Hex and socket sets – alternatives to Park SBS-1.2

Whilst I'd buy park special purpose tools for bike-specifc jobs, I'd not buy their generic tools as they seem overpriced and maybe a bit shabby even. Pliers / cutters - LIndstrom are the rolls royce of such things, albeit pricey, spanners, sockets, screwdrivers, allen keys: facom, bahco and so on. A...

Why the f is this remotely considered a driving offence rather than at theserious end of assault. You'd get a stiffer sentence for even carrying a knife never mind stabbingg someo r

Re: aluminium bars - 3 year life?

Mmm, 10,000km is around the life of a tyre - in fact my front tyre has likely done twice that. It seems pretty poor to have to replace handlebars more often than tyres

Re: Paying for a bike in cash - why?

Cash payment protects the seller - examine item, shake hands, hand over cash, hand over item - everyone happy ! Pay by bank transfer - these can sometimes be reversed / bounce-later eg the various overseas scams. Pay by paypal - then buyer claims item is defective or "you never sent it" de...

Re: How would you make up for shortfalls in engineers, doctors etc?

Since, I’n Mr Gove’s words “we’ve had enough of experts” we can just get non-experts in to do these sort of jobs - brain surgeon, aerospace engineer and so on; it’s all on YouTube these days after all

Re: quality allen keys

From the discussion on brands I'm tempted to go for this hex bit ratchet from Wera as a safe bet. not to say it’s a bad tool per se but I’ve not found that type of arrangement that good for Allen screws - a screwdriver handled ratchet is often easier for keeping the tool in the hole - and longer le...

Re: Sweden

no useful advice on touring, but do try and see the Vaasa in Stockholm. it is their equivalent of our Mary Rose - the most powerful warship in the world ... for about 20 minutes. Despite 300 years on the bottom it is intact due to the brackish water. highly highly recommended

Re: quality allen keys

mmm - none of the Draper stuff I’ve seen has been anywhere near Germany - though do concede they may be better these days. If you think I'm lying just say so don't bloody hint at it. Better these days - I'm talking about stuff I bought back in the seventies. This'll be why a lot of their stuff back...

mmm - none of the Draper stuff I’ve seen has been anywhere near Germany - though do concede they may be better these days. you do have to be wary of some of the “label” as opposed to manufactuer’s brands. in the 80s I had a full set of Kamassa sockets ina green tin and it was fantastic. it got nicke...

Why didn't she notice the trap door?

Maybe she can,t see that well, maybe she stepped backwards - after all you don’t expect a hole in a shop floor.

that said, a big fine seems a bit pointless, but your comment on “sectioning” the victim seems crass in the extreme

Re: quality allen keys

good makes include bondhus, Elkinds, Facom -none of which I can fault, and a basic set and / or fold up set is cheap enough from any of these and will be top notch. I do also have a stupidly expensive falcon t-bar set too - daft price at £70+ but it is really nice and I don’t regret it. a screwdrive...

Re: Wills & Testaments

I disagree with the “everyone should write a will” point. Eg my mum didn’t and everything straightforwardly went to my Dad. My Dad hasn’t (so I understand) so it’ll come my way. so far so good. my mrs and I have done wills as we don,t have kids so have to cover the scenario where we’re both killed i...

Re: Wills & Testaments

step 1 - buy a book which explains (uk) wills and the probate thing. read this and you’ll be better informed regarding diy or solicitor - -nd in any case will help you think it through, and explain the mechanics if you diy 2 are your affairs complicated - eg separated but not divorced , or cutting o...
