Re: Chain Length Formula For Bicycles with Rear Derailleur

slowster wrote: 13 Jul 2023, 12:04pm Campagnolo state not to use big-big with their derailleurs and shifters, because they consider the shifting feels better with the reduced tension of having the chain as long as possible without the lower run contacting the upper part of the jockey arm. I think that was how chains used to be sized, and big-big sizing appears to be something introduced by Shimano - initially I imagine because more tension on the chain and jockey arm suited MTB/off road use

Have any Shimergo users tried both long and short chains on their Shimergo'd bike, and have a preference for one or the other based on their experience of using both set ups?
I am a Shimergo user (Campag 10s ergos, Campag 9/10s front/rear derailleurs, Shimano
hub/9s cassette)
. I use the big/big method for sizing a chain and it works fine for me. I have on
very rare occasions used big chainring, big rear sprocket when riding and my drivetrains have not collapsed.

Re: What bike lock should I get?

SummitFreedom wrote: 12 Jul 2023, 1:42pm Cable? The cable that comes with the lock must go around the front wheel... Front wheel is quick release.
Won't THIS d lock fit around the pole and frame and rear wheel?
Surely you can make an educated guess as to whether the D-lock would fit around the pole, frame and rear wheel?*

*Hint.................probably not. I was referring to whether it would work, not if you were able to make an educated guess

SummitFreedom wrote: 12 Jul 2023, 1:13pm How will I lock my cycle here outside tesco with that lock? Isn't that white pole frame thing too thick for that lock?
That pole will be fine for the cable to wrap around.
SummitFreedom wrote: 12 Jul 2023, 1:13pm Also I wonder if such a heavy lock is worth carrying around where I live...
Only you will be able to answer that.

DevonDamo wrote: 11 Jul 2023, 1:24pm I jumped in to this thread with an early response in the hope that a bit of mockery might derail the inevitable - i.e. several pages of discussion, possibly even argument, on a non-topic.

Someone else also gave a more forthright reply along the lines of 'this thread doesn't deserve to be taken seriously' but I note the moderators have deleted that post.

The OP will be well aware that bikes last longer than 5 years ...
All of the above.

Also, why? People are communicating. It's mainly about cycles. What's the issue?
You've bought your bike, you're (presumably) riding it, and the more posts you make about
others riding faster than you is making you appear to be inadequate (and clueless) as a rider.
Don't make it worse. Besides, it's costing me a lot popcorn.

Oh yes, we have the bike.
We just have existential dilemmas over whether it's the right bike...

Still, it keeps us entertained. Ideal thread to dip into on those long Tour stages where nothing much is happening... 😉
I was going to say that I'd run out of popcorn, but didn't want the weight of the forum to come

I wonder if the producers and presenter of the episode would be interested in the discussion

I am five weeks post RALP surgery and awaiting histology results of the operation. I will wait at least twelve weeks before getting back on the bike but I’m interested to know when you felt comfortable returning to the indoor rower.

Thanks
I had the operation on 11th September, and went on the Concept2 rower (for gentle 500 metre sessions) during the first week of November. Short, flat 25 mile rides followed a few days later.

Post-op weeks 1 - 5 were incredibly painful. Keyhole surgery is not tiny incisions in the body.
It is more like, say, knife wounds. I had six of them in my stomach area, each incision about an
inch in length (each one closed by three staples). Once the staples were removed, the pain management became a bit easier.

SummitFreedom wrote: 30 Jun 2023, 11:55am I'm terrified of this happening to me. Giant hogweed is everywhere. 😢
Did you read the article? The boy brushed past it while cycling. Though council thinks it's common hogweed because they searched the area he told them it happened, and no giant hogweed was found.
They think it's common hogweed. So common one is dangerous too?
Point is you can easily touch it accidentally. Especially on a cycle.
It's very dangerous and it's growing all over the UK, including here in Kent.
When you're out cycling, cover your arms and legs, wear gloves and a full-face helmet.
All bases (ahmm) covered.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year (PSA of 23, Gleason of 7). I had the robotic
'keyhole' surgery (Sep 2022), followed by two weeks wearing a catheter. PSA now 0.1. I too,
am having to use the pump. The good news was that the two nerves that control erections
(that straddled the prostate) were saved, but in manipulating them to access the prostate, it affected the ability to have erections. I was told it could take up to two years for them to return to normal.

I was on Tadafil 20mg twice a week, but was recently put on the same pill @ 5mg every day
to see if that improves things. I'm halfway through the 2-month supply, so it's a wait and see.
I still have to have 3-monthly blood tests (the next one is first week of July). Oh, I'm two years younger than you. Riding and (indoor) rowing back to normal.

Trying to visualise your instructions.
* When the forearm is horizontal with the hand holding the weight,
* curl the forearm upwards (until it is vertical),
* turn the hand 180°
* then lower the forearm (until it is is horizontal)?
