Re: Velo Birmingham and Midland

If you are not willing to pay £79 or willing to wait until Spring 2019 to Velo Birmingham then you may interesting in Beyond the Dyke on 6th October, a 200km audax starting from Belbroughton in North Worcestershire, heading off towards Mid-Wales via the Clee Hills, Knighton, Presteigne, Teme Valley ...

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?

There are some very worrying aspects about this event from both sides. Many people on Stop Velo South are raising their objections in common with their democratic right but some of the attitudes and comments are quite frankly disturbing, for example, putting up cheese wire across the highway. Rather...

Beyond the Dyke - 205km - 6th October

Hello All, Alan Mason of CTC Heart of England ran a popular audax called 'Beyond the Dyke' but this disappeared off the calendar when Alan retired. Having heard a number of people call for its resurrection, I decided to relaunch the event for this year's Beacon RCC (Cycling UK affiliate) organised a...

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?

Today, West Sussex County Council held a debate on a motion proposed by Cllr O' Kelly, who is a cyclist herself. A webcast can be found at https://westsussex.public-i.tv/core/portal/webcast_interactive/360352 [you may have to wait for the recorded rather than live version to become available]. The m...

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?

I can only speak from experience in terms of CSM's previous event, Velo Birmingham. At this point I would like to stress that I am not opposed to the principle of closed road cycling events but CSM's approach was not acceptable. Here is a run-down on Velo Birmingham: Relationships with Communities -...

South Foreland to Cape Wrath (SE -NW), or Lowestoft to Ardnanmurchan (E-W).

A friend recently rode from the southern tip of Spain to the top of Norway in 6 weeks.

Re: a93 cairngorms

I will add to rjb's comments, it is an excellent choice of route. It may involve some fairly lengthy climbs, at times they are steep, but overall you may be rewarded with some excellent views assuming the cloud base is not too low. I rode this route from south to north last summer and yes, Cockbridg...

Re: End-to-End using Travelodge

But you are not guaranteed a room at Travelodge as I discovered to my cost once. Upon arriving at Glasgow Braehead at 11pm I was told, "sorry we are full up and you will have to relocate". This was despite booking and paying three months in advance and stating my arrival time. So be warned...

Re: A9 cycle path S of Newtonmore

It is not to clear from the TransportScotland website but I think that the Glentruim junction may be within the fold of the road works, so the lane might be best avoided and the Laggan Road taken instead. However and rather interestingly, the website also says, The scheme also requires the re-routin...

Echelon Cycles, Pershore

Echelon Cycles is a shop based in Pershore, Worcestershire that focusses on selling top of the range road bikes, but I purchased a Van Nicholas Yukon audax bike from them recently. Their service could not be faulted. Tim Ashton, the owner, was at hand. He spent about an hour sizing me up prior to or...

Re: Inverness to Wick - why not?

I rode this stage last August. SUICIDAL The section across the Kessock Bridge and to the Tore Roundabout along the A9. There is a reasonable NCN route alongside between these two points. AN ALTERNATIVE The section between Tore and Tain can by busy and unpleasant but not awful. Think about riding up ...

Re: Spa Cycles (Harrogate)

When visiting Spa Cycles the other week I was distinctly underwhelmed by their customer service. After having travelled half down the country on a pre-arranged visit to test ride one of their bikes, person 'x' brutely told me that I would not be allowed to test ride that day. The reason, 'the roads ...

Re: Alternatives to CTC/ETA Cycle Rescue Insurance?

Dave, thanks for the point on taxi lists. I already possess one and could donate it to the Beacon's Resource Page. I have at least three numbers for each market and principal town located between Mid-Wales, the South Midlands and down to Wiltshire. Last Sunday I had the misfortune to call for their ...

Alternatives to CTC/ETA Cycle Rescue Insurance?

Does anyone know of any cycle rescue insurance packages other than the version provided by the ETA/CTC? The ETA policy only transports the rescued rider to the nearest rail station or cycle shop. This as useful as a chocolate teapot if you do not live within close vicinity of a rail station or cycle...
