The movement is easily fixed with a bit of tape

Re: Is this good enough for a fully loaded camper longflap??
I have used one of these http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carradice-sqr-saddlebag-uplift-system-prod621/ for a few years with no trouble , but not for camping but it does seem sturdier than the Bagman.

Re: Replacing 26t inner with 22t
I used 52/38/24 with no trouble using an Ultegra front and rear mechs 28teeth admittedly only with a 12-25 cassette. Try it and see an inner ring is only a few pounds (see Spa Cycles) it is surprising what works in spite of the makers specs.

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability
concentrate on making the selecting mechanism for the gears as part of the hub, rather than the speed controller
See Rohloff hubs cable adjustment the selection takes place inside the hub ours has done 13000 miles so far.

Re: crankset stiffness
Mick even if everything were completely rigid, such a crude system as derallier gearing which just works by pushing the chain off one sprocket/chainring onto another while mounted on on roads that are anything but smooth, is bound to fail now and then.!!!
Also I wouldn`t say that 94 revs can be considered spinning out for an experienced cyclist, maybe over 110 rev you may have a point.

Re: Elliptical chainrings and dodgy knees
Shorter cranks also help knees ,that and not having the saddle too low as already mentioned.

Re: Sick of punctures
No-one seems to have what type of punctures the OP has are they from something ( A thorn, glass etc ) penetrating the tyre or are they impact puncturesfdrom low tyre pressures??

Re: Shimano Alfine 11 - Longer term reliability
Just a personal thing ,I have always just eased the pressure when changing any type of gear whether hub or derailier or car or motorbike it make engineering sense. It only needs to be a slight easing of power, therefore no loss of speed but a faster change with no breakages.

Re: Leg extension...what do you think?
Maybe you only need three measurements- Seat tube-Top Tube-and Headtube which determines how low or high the bars are

Hi
We have covered about 800 miles on our Rohlhoff tandem, and it works really well for us. I agree wth the contributor who says you don`t really need to know which gear your are in as there is no need know when to change chain rings or if the chain is running too far out of line.
The ratios are the same as we had with 24 D/R gears and are about the same as a 2 tooth difference between all the gears, fine for most situations except perhaps racing. If I had some spare cash I would equip my solo with one, but I have gone even simpler and built up a fixed bike for a change- no more gear problems-no choice.
