Why?
At age 14 your skeleton is not fully grown.

Re: touring energy honey

32 years ago when I was cycling in the Yukon and into Alaska i went through a loaf of bread every day, peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast, honey sandwiches for lunch, etc.
I remember sitting by the roadside on the Top of the World Highway eating my honey sandwiches in Grizzly Bear country 😂

The former.

To get over the polarised nature that these debates often descend into, it is useful to imagine the roles reversed.
A report of a close passing motorist crashes into a cyclist that had ridden round a pothole. How much time would you have for someone asking the question "Did the car crash into the cyclist or did the cyclist ride into the car drivers path?"

And if you can't avoid a car door then you would not be able to avoid a child stepping out from behind that car. Again this is not something we would accept as an excuse if a motorist did it. It is not as if keeping clear of parked vehicles is some sort of advanced cycling technique - it is in the very basics as taught to primary school kids at Bikeability level 2.
How do you know it's the former?

Plenty of people cycle in the door zone, and some of them get doors opened right in front of them.

Yes it's not clear is it?
Well, it's clear in one way. The door was opened into the cyclist's path, else they could not have hit it. The unclear bit is how much time elapsed between door opening and cyclist arriving.
The door might have been left open for some time before the cyclist appeared on the scene, the cyclist may have been distracted and not noticed the door.
We don't know the details.

Re: State Pension

rjb wrote: 2 Apr 2024, 5:13pm The issue was the short timescale. Looking at the letter dated sep 2013 some people about to retire at 60 would have had the rug pulled beneath them and told they would have to make provision to retire later. Not much notice for a fundamental change to their retirement plans. Some would have jobs which required them to retire at 60. Finding employment at that age with a comenserate salary would have been impossible. Then they had a further kick in the teeth to increase the retirement age to 66.
The short notice was the issue with the way it was foisted on the public.
The Pensions Act 1995 introduced the timescale for the women's state pension age to move to the same as men's at 65.
So they should have known about it since 1995 as it was in the news at that time.
There was some further tinkering with the timescale in the 2010's and the increases of ages to 66 and 67.

Re: Best tyres for touring

Marathon Plus have never been the best choice.
Punctures are not really an issue touring, you're unlucky if you get one in 1000 miles
Marathon Supreme have been my touring tyres of choice over the past decade or so.

My experience with C17 Cambium is sort of comfortable for short distances but after that it's complete torture, nowhere near as comfortable as a B17.

Re: 12 Speed Brompton

My Brompton is currently a '27 speed'
BWR 3 speed hub, with Minimods triple sprocket conversion, and a triple chainset with front derailleur.
Gear range 16" - 88"
For greater simplicity I'm thinking of changing it to '15 speed' by going back to single chainring and fitting one of the third party 5 speed cassettes to the BWR hub, along with a compatible Chinese derailleur and tensioner.
Or maybe get rid of the internal hub gear and keep the front triple, with the 5 speed cassette etc fitted to the hub used for the two speed Brompton.
Gear range will be about the same.

Re: Brompton 2017 6 speed convert to 12 speed?

You can't easily convert an existing Brompton to the new 12 speed system due to the different rear triangle design, the new derailleur isn't compatible with the old triangle.
However there are aftermarket derailleurs available that will do the same job and aftermarket multispeed cassettes, shifters, etc.
Not cheap though, but probably cheaper than a new rear triangle etc.

There is also the Personal Savings Allowance and the Starting Rate for Savings to take into account so you won't pay tax on all savings anyway, unless you have a high income that takes you into the Additional Rate band
