Re: Bar-end shifters

I would certainly get rid of dt shifters and go onto bar end at least as they are super to use and much safer as hands are still on bars when changing gear. Shimano do a great dura ace bar end lever for the 9 speed and it works a treat.and is a lot cheaper than sti. I got a couple of these sets on e...

Re: Shaft driven bike?

Blimey..what fun...too complicated I reckon..how would you fix it when it broke? Stick with the good old chain ,nothing can touch the mechanical efficiency of it,and think of all those electric gears we can now play with. Peterp

Re: What's a Comfy saddle

I have discovered the WTB Silverado and its fantastic. Very light and comfy.. audax riding and just out on sunday mornings,,,really good. Make sure your saddle is at the correct height and absolutely flat to the horizontal .. and the bars are at the correct reach and height. Might sound daft all thi...

Re: new brake pads for old bike ...

Hi malvern keep up the cycling. I reckon you should go onto E bay and get some new brake calipers .Modern, and your troubles would be over. I have tiagra calipers. and they are really good..audax riding etc. Keep your rims clean and replace pads when they wear. Look at brake cables also..cheap and e...

Re: A retrograde step?

Well done sir keep the flag flying for the old way.I myself am well retired and now have every concievable changing system on 7 bikes! I actually prefer the 9 speed bar end,but really would not go back to dt levers purely on the grounds of safety. One big pothole just when changing gear and you coul...

Re: sugino triple

HI barbelfish, I think you could use any triple road front changer with this chainset, and a long cage rear mech to take up the slack. I assume this is a road bike with shimano changers? Dont try a mtb triple front changer as I did this and found the arm on the mech fouled the rear tyre as the wheelb...

Re: Clipless Shoes & pedals - how comfortable?

Been cycling for over twenty years and the clipless pedal is undoubtably one of the best improvements of recent years. It is a lot safer and gives a much better power input to the pedal. Go for the spd type .not the racing look type, and the shimano a520 pedal. Set the release tension to soft, and wh...

Re: Gearing advice for a tourer

Have just seen on e bay a very nice stronglight triple going cheap, with 28 inner. That with 32 sprocket would be enough to go up the side of a barn. I find that with this sort of gearing a long arm rear mech (I have a deore) is essential. The stronglight is square bb.but on e bay these things are ver...

Re: Gearing advice for a tourer

I ride lots of audax events and this is my problem as old age creeps up, Change the inner ring for a smaller one and get a cassette with 32 sprocket. You can do a lot with different chainsets and bottom brackets but then it gets fiddly and expensive.I have got the stronglight triple and its excellent.

Re: Stronglight BB - Compatible with Shimano Chainset?

See Sheldon Browns excellent website for data on all sorts of things including bbs. Most chainsets are now JIS (if square) as are all shimano square. I would stick to shimano bbs as they are cheap and very easy to take out and replace with tools that are not expensive. As an extra I would say that a...

Re: Tandem Query

To keep the family riding together I have bought a tandem to fit my nearly 8 yr old as stoker. Much searching of blogs and e bay pointed the way to a Viking Salerno and to Cycle King at Croydon who sell this for c£350. this model has 15in rear and is quite a reasonable machine for the money. To make...
