Re: Feeling a bit lonely......
I always acknowledge other cyclists outside of towns - people think you are weird if you do so in town.

Re: Single Speed Freewheel Day Trips
I'm in a rather hilly part on the Surrey/Hants border, approx 2 mile drop/climb of 300m to anywhere from/to home, I find I have to walk back up, not because I care about walking, but it is quite tiring at the end of a ride, but I do like S/Spd riding.
I am fairly old, 64, fat & unfit now, having been unable to ride for a while owing to injuries, but I want to get back out, but not over do it, so was asking to see if I was being over ambitious.
I have a nice Felt with a 60" gear that is just about right for me, so will put up with walking that big hill back to home.

Single Speed Freewheel Day Trips
Although I have titled it day trips, multi day rides also accepted.
I'm thinking of returning to S/Spd cycling again.
I used to ride around Kent, Surrey, & Sussex, with occassional trips to Essex & Herts, (about 20 years ago now).
Just wondering how many others ride single speed freewheel bikes, & what you get up to, areas you ride, mileages you cover, that sort of thing.
Also, it would be nice to see pictures of your bikes.

Re: Buying a new bike technique?
Walk out of the house, then ride it back home. But I usually buy it for myself as a (birthday/xmas) present.
When I moved from Kent to Hampshire, I only took 14 bikes with me. These have 'worn out' over time & have had to be replaced by new bikes, but I only have 4 now, (+ 2 in bits).

Re: Straight or Drop Bars
After a quick read through this thread I am seeing the phallacy of only having one position for your hands if you ride straights, that is totally wrong, I use at least 4 different positions on my straights, to help from getting fatigued; & I could place them in another 2 positions, & that without using bar ends, which would add another 3 positions.
You set the saddle position up first, so as to get the most efficient pedalling action, & then you set up the reach to & height of the handlebars to suit you.

How about
The Charity Called CTC, formerly known as the Cyclists Touring Club, instigated as The Bicycle Club
trips off the tongue & says what it really is.

The simple answer is drivers attitudes.

Re: brooks saddle -which model
Normally applied on the under side of saddle with an old paint brush & left to soak in. (That's how I've always done it.) It is to stop the leather taking in water.

Re: Chain tool with 'pin stop'
There are some chain breakers that use a circlip over the thread to stop you pushing the pin too far, unfortunately, I can't remember who makes them, sorry.

Re: New bike, need help.
Lower the gearing on the Randonneur for your commute; then buy a nice Audax bike for your 'leisure' rides.

Most of what you are after would be catered for with an 'Audax' bike. (Spa Cycles is one such.)

Re: Pompino V Day One
Just noticed your post/question.
I was going to get a Day One only to find out they all came with 175mm cranks, I required 170mm.
I don't have first hand experience of either bike but a lot of people do tend to ride Pompinos.
(Sorry it's not much help.)

Re: Low trail geometry frames
I usually go for about an inch & three quarter trail, stable but not sluggish handling, if you have too little it will be hard to keep in a straight line, likewise if you have too much you'll end up with very heavy steering. I think you will find that 650B used to be fitted to old roadsters, when they were known as 26" x 1 1/2"

Re: Recovery of Mojo
When I'm off the bike for a while, the turbo comes out for about a month to get my aerobic fitness back, then it is just having to build up the miles again. (In my case, it takes quite a while, unfortunately, but it has to be done.)
