Re: Headset bearings

mattsccm wrote:Anyone found a supplier of headset cartridge bearings that don't cost a fortune. Despite many cycle manufactures saying other wise head set bearings are not an industry standard according to several local bearing factors. I just resent paying 10 to 5 quid for each bearing when a near identical, but much better quality, one without the outer chamfer if a couple of quid. I did all 12 bearinsg on my Specialized MTBs swinging arm for 30 quid cash.
Supply and demand I suppose but that doesn't stop me trying to find a cheaper supply.

Brucey wrote:it is a 1/2" drive wrench; typically these have a lowest calibrated setting of 20-30Nm, but some when set to minimum are less and some are more.

For bicycle work a 3/8" drive torque wrench is probably best; but even these will often struggle with low (M5 bolt etc) torque settings.

cheers

Any recommendations Brucey? Recently bought a some lovely carbon, and am terrified of my seatclamp!

Re: Koolstops with Shimano RSX Brakes..

The slot appears to be 6mm (5.97mm with my super precision 'Lidl' calipers), the OD of the sleeve thingie is '6.47' so 6.5mm......... :(

Koolstops with Shimano RSX Brakes..

Hi guys just a warning from a penitent and now skint cyclist... They do not fit!

These are the beasties...

From this page: http://www.koolstop.com/english/road_pad.html

Problem is the sleeve nut (s.e.x. bolt) does not ft through the slot in the caliper. I could I suppose mill/rout the slot the extra 1mm, but off the shelf, it is a no-go.

A question for the more experienced bike techs, if I just used a M5 Nylock nut, would that be OK or dangerous in any way? The threaded bolt fitted to the block/shoe would obviously then be too small for the accursed slot, as the sleeve nut is I guess supposed to be a loose interference fit.

New frame, transfer 105 Groupset, BB advice please

Hi folks, I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of my new frameset, a 2006 carbon Specialized Roubaix. I am planning to strip the bits from my Bianchi, mostly 105, 'converted' to 10sp, (just the brifter and cassette/chain, the mechs etc work OK with the 10sp).

My first worry is the BB, will I NEED a new one? The one I have seems good. How do I tell if it has Italian or English thread. How do I know what chainline I need? I am not 100% sure if the new frame was originally Triple, Std, or Compact, will this be a problem?

Any and all advice and links would be appreciated.. thanks!

The canal passes close to both stations, towpath is fine for bikes.

Re: France which way - North to South, or South to North..?

stephen_ wrote:Thanks for the replies!

Basically this issue was based on a logistical thing with transporting bike but now I'm having a total nightmare choosing areas in france to go to- mainly because they are on opposite sides of the country! (I have been reading about areas I hadn't planned on)

I want (would like) to do

Epernay - Champagne
Alsace Wine Route
Rhone valley - Dijon - Avignon
The Loire valley
Dordogne
Bordeaux
Tuscany ideally (eek)

I have 4-5 weeks and want to visit these all- I will inevitably have to make my mind up and eliminate some.
I am interested in food and wine and meeting people too, I will be cycle camping. (first timer!)

What would you do? - where in France would you not want to miss?!

I am flying into Paris so will get a train to a starting point, I was going to do champagne - alsace and straight south to avignon, then across to Italy and tuscany.

However... I have a bad feeling I may be missing out on the best regions- Loire and Burgundy/Dordogne, and therefore I'm thinking of re-jigging the trip to include these.

Hmmm. My indecisiveness is killing me right now.!

If you are going from Alsace to Champagne and thence to Avignon, you will go through Burgundy (Bourgogne)? Or are you mixing up with Bordeaux region?
