From Steve Grimwood at Elmy cycles:
A sad start to the Elmy Year -
Our good friend and loyal servant has been stolen !!
Yes, the trusty Elmy Tandem, that which has served us so well has been pilfered over the festive break by some nasty little toe rag.
During that time wh...en most of us were enjoying roasted chestnuts by the fire and enjoying a time of peace and goodwill to all, some sneaky little ***** snuck round our back passage and made off with her. Where she is now we don't know, but however long it takes we will find her.
For now we are left with the fond memories of Batman & Robin riding off into the distance, Sky Rides & Bicycle Balls, Ice creams in the sun and trips to the marina with perhaps slightly worried suppliers riding on her rear.
We will liase with the police and keep you informed, but in the meantime please keep your eyes peeled for her, she's one of a kind, you won't see another - a shiny metalic red Schwinn cruiser tandem, you can see her in our photos during happier days when we were still together.
Please help us find her so we can look forward to parking her front wheel firmly in a suitable slot of her current keepers anatomy.
Thank you tandem hunters everywhere.

I drive as well and have been a HGV driver of articulated vehicles, I find cyclist behaviour in London needs to raise their standards. As I was driving around the same Bow roundabout a cyclist in black jumped the lights as I was coming through the green and ignored my horn that I had pressed for a good 4 seconds while braking.
Cyclists need to treat the cycle like a car and not position themselves between metal, if there is no cycle lane hang back and protect yourself.
I often feel like a fool when I'm on my bicycle waiting at the red light and see many cyclists pass me going through the red light, I would fully support to see the police fine cyclists not following the rules of the road.
Bad cycling is putting challenges on transport companies to fit sensors on the sides of vehicles, anything that is man made is fallible and should not be relied on fully. Cyclist Behaviour must prevail, follow the highway code and not deflate to bad driving standards, as I will admit there are many bad drivers as well.

Re: Make Bow safe (LCC)
Dear [redacted]
Bow roundabout and cycle safety
Thank you for your email.
The Mayor is very concerned indeed by the recent fatal collisions at Bow roundabout and his thoughts and sympathies are with the friends and family of both victims.
The Metropolitan Police is investigating both collisions in order to determine the specific causes. Alongside this, Transport for London (TfL) is urgently reviewing the operation of Bow roundabout. In addition, TfL will review all major planned schemes on the Transport for London Road Network and all junctions on the Cycle Superhighways already introduced. This builds on work TfL is already doing to improve cycling safety, for example by trialling blind spot safety mirrors through the Cycle Superhighways programme and developing Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver training courses to specifically address the safety of vulnerable road users. TfL will widen this work by initiating an independent review of the safety of HGVs used in the construction industry.
The Mayor is determined to maintain and build upon the cycling revolution that is happening in London and, while overall road safety in London is improving, the recent fatal collisions at Bow have made clear the need for all organisations involved, including TfL, the Boroughs, the freight industry and the Police, to redouble their efforts to further improve cycle safety.
Thank you again for writing to the Mayor.
Yours sincerely

Re: Do handlebars & stems break?
broke the stem on a bike a few years ago. rode into the back of a car and v. lucky to come off with no worse than bruises. alloy stem about 6 years old that came with the bike (Giant). it felt little funny before it broke, but didn't pay it any mind. now check anything that doesn't seem right.

CTC depends on its volunteers. What are you doing about it?

Re: Trangia stoves
I lived for a while in Canada. there weren't any Trangia stoves. most people used canned heat (sterno, or a couple of proprietary versions that are a little better), or liquid fuel. The easiest liquid fuel was denatured alcohol which you could get in any chemist. Pour some in an empty tin and put a little grill over it and you have a stove.
Canned heat isn't that bad. It's less likely to leak than meths, but it takes perhaps 50% longer to heat stuff & you can't really depend on cooking with it.
A mate of mine spilled the alcohol in his panniers, then accidently kicked over the tin can stove.
quick end to his tour. no damage other than clothes and panniers. it goes out quickly, but not before burning the bottom of the pannier that had alcohol spilt in.

Cheers, have sent them something.
I think that email address might be info@lcc.org.uk (lcc.org seems to "legacy christian church")
Sorry about that. Too much of a hurry I guess.

Re: the door zone
And I know someone who entered the door zone of an apparently empty car, only to have the door open in front of him. Two kids were left in the car while mum knocked on the door of a house.
One child was playing with the door latch & the other (on the floor) kicked the door open.

Make Bow safe (LCC)
http://lcc.org.uk/pages/bow-roundabout
Two fatal crashes in three weeks at this location is an unacceptable death toll.
Please add your voice to those calling for change.
We want you to write to the Mayor of London to tell him that Bow roundabout must be made safe immediately.
safeBow@lcc.org.uk
Boris Johnson is sceptical that junction design is key to cyclist safety, yet we know that's wrong.
After two deaths in three weeks, we need to tell him in large numbers that Bow roundabout must be made safe immediately, so there are no more lives lost.
Please email the following (or your own version) and send it to safeBow@lcc.org.uk
Dear Mayor,
I'm appalled at the two cyclist fatalities that have taken place recently at Bow roundabout.
I'm demanding you implement an urgent and effective redesign of this lethal junction, so no more families suffer the tragic losses of the last few weeks.
Yours sincerely
