Re: Auto vehicle lighting.
I've fiddled with my vehicles settings, and now my rear lights are on full-time - I've also altered the sensitivity of the auto headlights to come on earlier. Any recent car built for the European market will have the software inbuilt to do this!

Understanding Cycle Lanes

This caught my eye, and you can argue till the cows come home about "whose fault it was" on those columns and you will not change the average Daily Fail readers hatred of cyclists.
However what I did notice was the lack of knowledge of contributors when it came to cycle lanes. Many had viewed the site of the accident of Google Street View (I don't know how recent this view is, and things might have changed/improved since then) and seen that the actual cycle lane broken white line was not present at the bus stop just before the New Kings Road/Peterborough Road junction and in fact the cycle lane lines did not reappear until after the pedestrian crossing zig-zags (although there was a cycle marking on the actual crossing). Many thought that because there were no cycle lane lines painted on the road that the cycle lane actually finished at the bus stop!
I must admit, with all the various "cycle lanes" that I encounter, it's probably not surprising that the average driver (me included) are confused and sometimes misinformed.

Re: Worst ride of the year
I always pack light work gloves (Contour Avenger) - they keep some of the cold out and are really "grippy" for getting reluctant Marathons onto the rim. Trouble is when your hands are so cold, unless the thorn is really long you fail to feel it when you examine the tyre!

Re: High Performance Cars
Whether there are proportionately more serious accidents involving "high performance" cars I have no idea, however I passed my test in the 60's in a Morris 1100 - the modern equivalent would in the 60's be described as "high performance". But I counter this "high performance" car is much safer in all respects then the humble Morris 1100 (which would only go 10 mph over the speed limit)
All you need to see how it is the driver that is the cause of accidents is to vue the "dash cam" footage available on YouTube - idiots behind the wheel (and that includes 2 wheels) are there to be see in all types of vehicles. News about "high performance" cars in accidents tends to be a case of schadenfreude!

Re: Membership rates
Well, my copy of Cycle came, Page 14 "A vote for Change" announced the AGM voted and approved the change, but surprise, surprise no mention that only 2.91% of the membership actually voted for the "Change".

More New Cyclists (not necessarily "on the road")
I live in Stratford Upon Avon, and on my walks and rides I've seen many more cyclists out and about. Many are fairly obviously new or returned, but have been riding on roads (and pavements) that are relatively quiet. Now traffic (and pedestrian numbers) is slowly increasing in volume (but not slowing down) these cyclists are not as aware as long-term cyclists on the vagaries of the average motorist (and wandering ped). Oh for the days of the ease in which you could go for the National Cycling Proficiency Test!
I did mine in 1959 and have been learning to ride properly ever since?

Some groups did not read the memo!
Out for my solo ride this morning, lots of solo cyclists about, BUT 3 groups of at least 10 doubling up!
