Re: Misunderstood terminology

MickF is close, but not quite right. Work is torque (or force) multiplied by distance. Power is work divided by time. These are not definitions, just indications of the calculation process. Rotational Torque = force × distance (N×m) Power = Torque × angular velocity (Nm × rad/s) (note: a radian is ...

Advice on rear dropout!!

Hi, In preparation for a respray, removing the rear mech off my 531c woodrups took a lot of the threads with it. I've drilled it out to use a threaded insert like this.... http://www.billys.co.uk/english/group.php?prod=2idghsaver It's working ok...my only concern is the minimal metal thickness left....

Re: Why are Park Tools so expensive?

I had a 1/4 and 3/8 snap-on ratchet wear out, originally bought over 30 years ago. Had absolutely no issues with having the mechanisms replaced by the snap-on 'rep' free of charge. So, one benefit of spending ludicrous amounts on tools!! Tool prices, once you get over a standard of quality, become j...

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

 BTW I did a little more interweb trawling and it seems that (in the US) Harris cyclery have been a bit more upfront with their customers when IRD freewheels have failed. They have blamed some failed freewheels as being from a batch in which the pawl spring was somehow distorted when it was in...

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

tried oil through the freewheel....no change.....still two clicks per revolution. if this is caused by free play in the bearings (as suggested), chancing the lube might have an effect but the only real cure is to re-shim the freewheel so that the bearings are set right. This is usually more tedious...

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

There doesn't seem to be 'loud' clicking as the pawls locates when spinning by hand, so it may be, as you suggest Brucey, the pawls sticking. Is grease used in the freewheel? I assumed (and always used) light oil. very many freewheels are designed so that there are meant to be two pawls in engagemen...

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

It's a new chain....but good point though. It feels like the pawls are not locating cleanly (though there is no slip). There's no excessive play in the body....... Not sure I want to start stripping a new £40+ freewheel. re the freewheel noise; if it were mine I'd see if the bearings were set wrongl...

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

Frameset is fine....well, the noise wasn't due to the frameset (fitting the wheel to a different frames transferred the noise, replacing the freewheel stopped the noise) Have you had the frameset long? Do check it over carefully. I have one and the gear lever boss has dropped off and it also has chr...

Hi,

I'm after 12-28....it's for a French & Italian trip this year.....

what ratio freewheel are you after? I might have an unused good Maillard 7 speed freewheel. If interested, let me know the ratio and I'll have a rummage.

Cheers.

Re: IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

I wanted something nice for the bike....hence the IRD freewheel (couldn't find a new European 7spd 11-28 freewheel to go with the groupset)
I've got Shimano on all my other bikes and so wanted something different.

IRD v Sunrace 7spd freewheels

Hi,

Anyone with any experience of these two freewheels?
I'm building a roadbike (753 Peugeot with spidel groupset) and am looking for a 'quality' silver freewheel (non-indexed).
The IRD is almost 3x the price of the Sunrace......worth it?
