Re: What Has Made You Laugh Today ?

During my apprenticeship I was seconded to a substation in Indian Queens in Cornwall. We were being instructed in the operation of the substation by an engineer with a strong local accent. My fellow students became quite agitated and later admitted to me they didn't comprehend anything he said.
Being a Devon lad from Plymouth I could manage the dialect.
BTW the locals use "tiz" not it's.

Re: Ragleigh 20 + Chopper parts, pleae ID

Thanks Tatanab for those measurements. I just had a look at mine and can see the bush is worn allowing the fork to rock back and forth. As suspected the fork column isnt threaded far enough to install a threaded headset so an aheadset looks the best solution. I'll have to give it a trial and see if it allows enough room to put the stem clamp back on as I won't need both locknuts. All my stems are too short to fit deep enough to clear the slot in the fork but I have a suitable length of 7/8 tube which will drop to the bottom of the fork and I could then shim it to use an ahead stem but this will need the clamp refitting. This is the fall back solution. The nylon bush is like the ones posted up thread with the locating lugs.

rjb wrote: 13 Apr 2024, 8:44am I picked up another twenty locally to me but the steering is noticeably slack which probably indicates the nylon bush used in the top of the head tube is worn. I see folk have used an aheadset 1" top bearing to replace the bush but a couple of questions. Assuming the fork column is split to allow the existing clamp to support the stem, is there still room to refit the collar. If not then a standard quill stem may be needed which will have to be set very deep in the fork column to avoid stressing the fork column and premature failure. I know kingpin riders who did a similar mod suffered from this problem.

I think the existing fork column is not threaded deeply enough to allow a Raleigh headset cup to be used either.
Any advice appreciated.

Re: State Pension

Thanks Jonathan. I'll listen to this later but the thought crossed my mind.
Pensions are paid by NI contributions. The chancellor has been reducing NI contributions in his last 2 budgets and has indicated he's in favour of abolishing it. Is he preparing the way for a future whereby the state passes the responsibility for pensions onto workers through workplace pensions. The Australian model I believe.
It will be political suicide for whichever party does this. It's clear that the current arrangements aren't sustainable with an aging population.
If it looks like the Tories are heading for a major loss at the next election could they rush through some legislation to start the ball rolling.
I'm heading for the bunker.

Music i enjoy is often only released as a download or on a SACD. This is now a very specialist piece of equipment which i dont own and have no intention of going down that route. So i resort to copying it from U tube in a low quality.

Re: 1950'S Raleigh fork thimbles

Raleigh had there own standards for both fork column and bottom bracket threads. I picked up a 1976 Hercules recently which had Raleigh threads. I only wanted it for the Sturmey AW hub.
Thimbles are still sold by some retailers. Search on line.

Look for the instructions online. My bike requires the battery to be switched on then the mode button on the controller to be held down for a few seconds to activate it.

Re: Union 8601 BB dynamo missing bolt

I don't think it's critical so a standard metric screw should suffice. Whatever fits in the cylindrical cable clamp. Could be M5, M4 even M3.
I rigged up something similar on a soubitez bottom bracket dynamo with a cable, and DT lever. Drilled a suitable hole through the dynamo release lever and used a cable clamp from a caliper brake.

Re: Campag BB spindle / bearing slippage

It looks like the spring washer is supposed to grip the axle preventing it sliding through the bearing. Is there a groove in the axle or is it a star washer which grips the axle. Never seen one like that so I'm guessing. Possible the large washer should sit against the left bearing other way around with the spring washer holding it in place and the rubber washer then trapped between left cup and large washer. Only guessing mind.

4 speed triggers have to be positioned on the bend of the bar to give the 1st gear lever room to pull it into gear.

Re: Campag BB spindle / bearing slippage

Something not right there. The spindle should be fixed in alignment to the RH cup and unable to move along. A u tube video suggests the right hand axle and cup has more than 1 bearing which if yours is missing 1 could explain your issue. Here's the video. Hope it's useful.

Re: What size seat post do I need?

If you find a sticker indicating the frame tubing this can help. My MTB from that era with tange 900 double butted steel tubing takes a 26.8mm seatpost. Yours looks like a steel frame too.

I find the bikes are all bland clones. Not like the innovations which made an appearance in previous editions like this laid-back machine made for Steve Bauer.

Nor the suspension forks which were trialled. 😱
